Imagine the scene... leaving Manchester at two in the morning. Work in six
hours. Another five hours of travelling left. The vitriolic group of friends
that you share the back of an LDV 400 with are living up the night's gig experience.
fullspeedalone (or FSA for short) have just played In the City Unsigned 2006,
which seems like a pretty reasonable achievement for a band that's less than
a year old. Mimicking sexual activities with the back of the driver's seat whilst
steaming along the M6 is probably taking a bit too far though.
"I think a combination of being on a huge high after the response we received
from the people at the gig, coupled with the realisation of a very lengthy journey
home manifested itself in that slightly off the wall way!" comments FSA
vocalist and guitarist Chris. "I'm sure alcohol played its part too; microwaving
a plastic container in an Esso garage shortly after leaving Wales is testament
to that".
"We'd played at In the City, which is an awesome opportunity", muse's
Dave, FSAs vocalist, guitarist and van driver, "Just look at the other
bands who have played the event in the past, it's so encouraging. So I will
forgive the sexually explicit behaviour, for tonight".
FSA consists of two main songwriters; Chris Watts and Dave Ankers, who also
both share lead vocal duties. Having two singers lets the band layer their dynamic
sound with harmonies. "Harmonies make the sweetest of melodies all the
sweeter!" suggests Dave. The foundation of the band is provided by fellow
janner Rich Upton (bass), and devout Welshman Rob Stillwell (drums).
FSA are essentially a song driven rock band. Formed in late 2005 on a backdrop
of yuletide celebration and too much alcohol, the band set out to deliver melody
tinged rock songs with a snappy, dynamic edge.
Fusing the dynamics of bands like Cable, the pop of bands like Feeder and the
rock-melody clash of Queens of the Stone Age or the Foo Fighters, FSA deliver
up tempo songs with a thought provoking (and often twisted) lyrical content.
With sets all over the country at Amicus band of Britain awards (The Point,
Cardiff), Hope & Anchor, Dublin Castle (both London), Hub (Plymouth) and
a number of festival appearances including the BIBIC Biker fest Bills Big Bash
and the Plymouth & Yeovil Love Music Hate Racism fest among the hundred
plus gigs they've played so far, they are also forging a tight, engaging and
dynamic set. The boys are currently holed up working on even better material,
which forges their sound into a tight, rocking 'ne plus ultra'.
"Our aim is to play to as many people as possible, and hopefully they'll
all love us", enthuses Welsh tub-thumper Rob. So one question remains;
Can we sleep on your floor? FSA x
