Interests

  • General

    The obvious: writing and books.

I also enjoy movies, from the artistic indies to the schlocky "B" variation.
I've taken Mandarin (Ni hoa ma?), shoot archery (at paper, not animals), and have driven across Western Canada in a VW Beetle.

I like hiking, but prefer they be casual walks exploring great new locations. I had my share of crazy Olympic-worthy journeys across harsh Manitoban lakes ... great memories, but they're done.

  • Music

Mostly Heavy Metal from the 80s. Kick Axe, White Lion, Slaughter ....
    Yet my favourite band is Journey. {shrug}
  • Movies

Watership Down (based on the novel by Richard Adams),
The Crow (only the one with Brandon Lee),
    Serenity (Joss Whedon),
    Spiderman,
    Batman Begins (the others sucked),
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (or anything by Joss Whedon),
    Highlander (only the original)
  • Television

I also enjoy King of Queens,
    Supernatural,
and (although it's been cancelled) Firefly.
  • Books

Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis (changed my life!)
Druid's Tune by OR Melling (this book made me a reader),
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson,
    Dr Illuminatus by Martin Booth,
    Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver,
    Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber,
    Demonata series by Darren Shan,
    Sunshine by Robin McKinnley,
And I could go on and on...

About me:

The Official James McCann Site.

James McCann grew up on the icy plains of Manitoba, where he spent most of his teenage years reading comics and training in tae kwon do.

In 2002 he came to the West Coast, where he’s worked as a bookseller and a workshop leader, mentoring youth in creative writing. When he isn’t writing books for teens, McCann is practicing tae kwon do or going on hikes with his shih tzu, Conan. James lives in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

FLYING FEET
(ORCA SPORTS)

Coming SPRING 2010

Jinho is frustrated by the limitations of his traditional tae kwon do training, so when he is scouted by a trainer from an underground mixed martial arts club, the prospect of fighting without boundaries is pretty exciting.

But the more involved he gets, the more disturbing he finds it and the harder it is to find a way out. Underground MMA is a free-for-all: no weight classes and no referees to stop the fight if it goes too far.

When Jinho is set up to fight an opponent known as The Ripper, he realizes that he doesn’t belong in this world, but the only thing that can save him is the ancient code of tae kwon do.

PYRE!
(Rancour Chronicles BOOK TWO)
"A riveting read about an ordinary boy caught in an extraordinary war between vampires and werewolves. Pyre burns up the pages. I couldn’t put it down!"

Mari Mancusi - Author of Boys that Bite

Jonathan Pyre and Nick Bender are arch rivals — both nuts about Karen, the head cheerleader at Fillmore High. After a fight between the two, Nick forces Jonathan to vandalize a neighbor’s house.

The unlucky Jonathan is caught in the act and agrees to complete chores for the owner as penance. Soon, what began as an adolescent rivalry takes a sinister turn — Whittaker, the neighbor, is actually a vampire locked in a ruthless battle with Rancour, a werewolf dedicated to ridding the world of Whittaker and his ilk.

As Jonathan finds himself becoming stronger, with hypersensitive hearing and vision, he wonders: Is it the physically demanding chores? Puberty? A tumor? Whatever it is, it gives him the confidence he needs to pursue Karen.

However, when dead bodies begin piling up, Jonathan realizes the truth — he’s been secretly enlisted as a foot soldier in the war between werewolf and vampire.

This absorbing novel blends humor, suspense, and nail-biting horror in a format that engages even the most reluctant readers.

(Rancour Chronicles BOOK ONE - new edition 2009)
"Vampires, werewolves, and teenage angst the supernatural has often been worked into teen tales, but rarely in quite the way that Vancouver author James McCann has done in his first novel."
Quill and Quire, October 2005

James McCann at Summer Dream Literary Arts Festival 2008

..

James McCann, author of young adult novels Rancour and Pyre, was caught on tape at Vancouver's Summer Dream Literary Arts Festival.

James talks about how he creates his world where vampires and werewolves war, gives us a reading, and describes how he changed his novel to keep the cover art where his 16 year old main character plays a $30,000 guitar!

The cover? Hmmm...as a potential reader - I'm thinking it's moody, dark - like if the guy raises his head and meets your eyes - you might be in for a bit of a shock. But I haven't read the book yet so I may be way off. As a musician - I'm thinking...where's his left hand and what's up with the top of his guitar? (close to his chest). I love the bats on his pick guard / neck of the acoustic. Nice.

FOR YOU MY FRIEND ... A POEM FROM THE LUNACY MACHINE
    HERE IS ...

    SICK

    I called in sick to work today;
    Sometimes that’s not so bad.
    My head is stuffy;
    My body’s achy;
My hands and legs are kinda shaky.
My eyes are weary and sort of blurry.
My sinuses, too, have started hurting.
My nose is dripping; my stomach bloated.
My cheeks, in fact, are kinda swollen.
With that, I called in sick.

I thought the average flu for sure.
Who wouldn’t with what I’ve got?
But something told me it was more than that
When I turned the TV on.

    There were riots in Virginia.
There was looting in New York.
They were declaring martial law in towns I’d never heard before.
They were interviewing doctors who had learned of a disease,
And they mentioned that the plague began in Nashville, Tennessee.

Then they interviewed a patient who was pointing at his eyes. He said,
“There are spiders all around us!
They’ll lay their eggs inside us!
    These spiders here are poisonous!”
Then he dropped his hands and died.
