Early this morning a massive earthquake (measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale) hit the Sichuan Province of central China. SOS Children's Villages operates 9 villages in China, and as of 1:20PM EST, we are still awaiting word from our headquarters on the state of our village located in the province’s capital, Chengdu. The SOS village at Chengdu is comprised of 15 family houses, a medical center, an SOS Kindergarten, an SOS Youth Facility, and an SOS Vocational Training Center in Chengdu.
There are 8,500 confirmed deaths in the Sichuan Province and at least 9,000 confirmed deaths all together according to Reuters and CNN. Chinese officials have yet to reach people located at the epicenter of the earthquake due to poor road conditions; the death toll is expected to rise as officials gain entry into the more isolated areas of the province. There have been reports of schools, offices, hospitals, homes, and chemical plants that have collapsed, and over 300 confirmed aftershocks. The quake itself was felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand, and is the largest earthquake to hit China in 32 years.
