FUNKATRON - [fuhngk-ä-ch-ron]: (n) 1. The musical creation and expression of five individual’s hearts and souls. (v) 1. To funk the rhythm. 2. To funk the rhyme 3. To transcend musical genres, space, and time. Funkatron started as a trio (Chris, Jon, Ian) in August of 2004. They spent about 6 months blending each others influences to create a newer, edgier funk sound, gaining an instant fan base in and around Gainesville. The addition of Coop, in the spring of 2005, sent Funkatron to a whole new level, incorporating wild synth sounds and incredible vocals to their already intense progressive funk sound. The group worked, consistently gigging, toward their debut EP - "Skylab Sessions", which came out Jan. of 2007. The recent addition of Grant on percussion has further filled Funkatron's sound and added a whole new element to their live show. The boys are currently working on many new songs(and old ones) to play around the country and they have just finished their FIRST FULL-LENGTH ALBUM for release in MAY! If listeners are lucky, Pra-Spect will show to a show and rhyme on a dime, or guest horn players will help blowout the place.
Funkatron has too many influences to list but draw their main inspiration from - Herbie Hancock, James Brown, Soulive, Medeski Martin and Wood, Bob Marley, The Roots, The Flecktones... to name a few.
Funkatron is definitely set apart from most bands by their intensity and respect for the music. They constantly create new sounds that pay homage to past artists, and blow up on stage to make the people dance!
"From the moment Funkatron took the stage, no one could escape their infectious grooves!" -Tattoo Todd of The Scene
"When you come to a Funkatron show, bring your dancing shoes!" -INsite Magazine
“Funk is an old groove, but with Funkatron, it’s got a whole new gleam!” –A&R Select
A&R Select from Los Angeles has recently signed on Funkatron as one of their premier artists. This and the creation of FunkaRecords - a new local Indie label - is helping spread the new funkasound!
