At Funk Revival Entertainment, we have our own definition for the word “Funk.” To our company, Funk is no longer just used to describe an amazing era of fashion and music. We believe the feelings aroused by things that are “Funky” could only be describe as “Soul-Stirring.” Funk is that certain something - that feeling that seems filthy and amazing all at once. It’s when we reach that contradiction that we tap into the essence of the Funk. And in lesser words I can say: Funk is the “Movement of the Soul.”
We feel that the Funk never died, is just moved on & on, and we are reviving the ideals of that era, not the music. Funk just evolves under different labels, it will never die. These ideals are made up from a liberal thought of living life to the fullest, having fun, dancing and laughing your life away in happiness. It's not a constant glorification of poor role models and ideals that teach our youths about topics that should not concern them.
FRE believes: there is too much untapped talent in the world, and we feel that our own inner cities contain a plethora of artistic power and beauty, they’re like cauldrons overflowing with it. And the proprietors of this movement feel that entertainment needs to go back to the days of Funk, when dancing and art was a way of life, harmonious music created to make people dance, not pimp b**ches and glorify bad hustles. The road modern Hip Hop has taken has made the earlier generations scratch their heads in bewilderment and disgust. Why have we turned our role models into gangsters and sluts, forsaking the arts that founded this movement?
It is our Hope to revive the qualities of a earlier generation, by providing the youth of today jobs to use their urban talents, oppertunities to get paid respectfully for their beauty, competitions to train for, venues to filter their energies that are constructive towards their development, not destructive like the faulty role models in television, film and music.
Through years, upon years of being in the entertainment world, the proprietors of Funk Revival Entertainment have gathered the most talented and elite collection of dancers, models and artists in South Florida, and from the rest of the world. We work with artists that share our vision of keeping talent raw but polished and always reaching out towards the newest generation to influence them into a positive lifestyle where success has no limits.
-Timothy Lee Johnson AKA: Mechanical Master-
President, CEO of FRE
Timothy Lee Johnson (AKA: Mechanical Master) began learning the mannequin and robot in 1969 at the age of 6. He used to watch his older sister, Shelia Johnson Gooding, after learning from his older sister. Growing up in the ghettos of Hollywood, Tim soon found refuge in dancing and quickly became a family favorite at parties. Since childhood, Tim had a dream of being a dancer, using his natural talent to gain popularity in the nearby neighborhood until he was old enough to go to nightclubs and jams. In few years he became the top, circuit club champion, dominating the dance circles in Dade and Broward counties. He popularity was vast and he performed in many concerts and special event in the 80’s. Known for his amazing Popping skills, he influenced many generations after him as a true icon of South Florida.
-Otto Vazquez AKA: Aquaboogy-
VP and Director of FRE
Dancer, Choreographer
Otto Vazquez (AKA: Aquaboogy) was a child when Tim and many other dancers in the 70’s and 80’s were cutting up dance floors. But his love began then, and carried over from childhood into his teens. So when the 90’s came into play, even though the dance was obscured and lost at the time in America, he took to learning Popping and Locking, the dance styles he had loved since he was a child. At the time Europe was experiencing a resurgence of real Hip Hop. Everyone was Mcing, Beat-Boxing, Breaking, Popping & Locking. Graffiti was everywhere, it was like they were going through what New York went through in the 80’s, but a decade later. This influenced Otto to become part of the global movement to revive these styles. In few years he rose to the top of the rankings and went from being a US dance competition champion, to an internationally acclaimed performer. He is the writer, choreographer and director of Funk, The 5th Element.
Who I'd like to meet: Our professional instructors have been teaching for years. We are proficient in teaching all levels, from ages 6 and up. We have a system used to create some of the most talented street dancers in the South Florida area. Now launched into the competition circuit, they are reaping many rewards.
