Funk Thunder came from strange series of coincidences, which some may say were meant to be. A universal energy that radiated through several bodies and forms, stripped to the bare-bone necessity of music for the soul. It started when writer and poet, Stephen Roberts heard the complaints of virtuoso bass player Scott Margolin of Six Sigma and the loss of their guitar player. He then heard guitar player Kid Sicily had recently lost their bass player in his group Nano Frog. When he chose to listen to the two CDs and found a synchronicity between them, he decided to ask the rhythm section and the guitarist to meet for an experimental day of recording, in which he would ask if they could try a song hed written when he left the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, called Smooth Shoes (a tale about Keith Moons Neon Blue Velvet Platform Shoes). The rehearsal was like magic and the four men, without a recorder, knew they had to meet again, this time to get it on tape. MILC formed as a rock band, but due to the incredible demands of every day life, the complexity of time issues, and the location of the four members, folded after its brief life. The rehearsals (a total of 4 within a period of a year and a half) were far too difficult to coordinate. An understanding of these issues was essential to preserve the magic, and the ingredients were far too important to let go. A statement on the MILC site (www.milcrock.com), explains a new universal vision which created itself and allowed the joining of these forces, when convenient and essential to personal harmony. Funk Thunder was a byproduct of MILC, with the guitarist, Kid Sicily and the vocalist Stephen Roberts, pushing forward. Like the mighty Oak whose roots are tapped into the depths of an earthly soul, electricity was in the air. It was another experiment to originally create some concepts for MILC, but when Roberts arrived at Kid Sicilys home, after listening to an assortment of hard funk, the men started to spontaneously create a music different from the original, but adapted for funk grooves. Funk Thunder was formed amidst loud and furious storms that plagued the Long Island town that evening, as if Thor himself hammered the island at the sounds created by the two. In a period of five hours, 5 songs were created. The second meeting produced another five songs, hammered out by the stresses of the day, three of the best songs being formed at the witching hour, spontaneously, in a session which went from 10pm to 4am. Beyond fatigue, the men kept focused on the work at hand. A valuable lesson learned, never let go when the juices are simmering, the flavors are highest after a good boil. Funk Thunder, a funkalicious duo. Ying meets Yang. Music meets poetry.
