About me: Steve Dixon began playing drums at the age of four. The two people who had a major influence in his musical life at that early age were his two older brothers Chip and Darryl. They both played in a band that would rehearse at their home. After many nights of sitting on the steps listening, during the day Steve would work his way to the drum set and begin to imitate what he saw his older brother Chip playing at rehearsal. His Dad even made blocks so that his feet could reach the pedals. In a short time, Steve too was playing all of those funky James Brown and Kool and The Gang songs lick for lick. He was well on his way to bringing the funk!
At the age of thirteen, Steve learned how to read music and joined the Senior High School Marching Band while still attending Junior High School. He graduated from Rahway Senior High School where he performed in the Marching Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band. Steve went to Howard University in Washington DC. During his four years there he spent most of his time at The School Of C or gigging and rehearsing.
Steve has been influenced and inspired by many different artists from all genre's of music including Jazz, R&B, Funk, Fusion and Rock. He has played in bands that have opened for some of today's top artists such as The Spin Doctors, Foreigner, Mother's Finest, The Brand New Heavies, Nikka Costa, Morris Day and The Time, Kool and The Gang, PM Dawn and Silk. He can be seen performing with some of Atlanta's hottest Funk/Pop/Soul bands GURUFISH or ENCORE. To check his availability for gigs or recording sessions, you can email him at steve@stevedixon.net.
Steve endorses and plays the following:
