Sounds Like
It's all about the Mustard ... Funky Mustard that is. Bubblin' crude and pure rock that is steeped in the tradition that has your soul rockin', like the masters of rock . Much like the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Jethro Tull, U2, and AC/DC. Rockin' and Rollin' on the cutting edge. But, I want to know if your gonna leave any Mustard in that jar? I dig the sounds boys, keep the fire burning. Please remember, I always like it when you go down to Nawlins, especially like back in '67.
- Jeff Kelley - FM 90.9 KTSU - Jazz in all its wonderful colors.
Funky Mustard defies description. Their infectious melodies , and heartfelt lyric's are the stuff that legends are made of .
Funky Mustard was just a song originally. It stands for that Jar of Mustard in your Frig with the spicy Herb's , and rough cut seed's that give it Flavor . Adding to it , from time to time with other seasoning's . Giving it that Odd mix of Spice , and flavor that you have yet to discover .
Kevin Crenshaw resident drummer , and Singer/songwriter/Guitarist Larry D. White have played together for over 15 years in various Cover bands in , and around Houston . Sneakyhurl was probably their most notable. Playing classic cover songs like , ZZ Top , Allman Bros, Credence Clearwater Revival , and Led Zeppelin at several local Bars . After discovering Reggae in the late 80's , and falling back in love with Jazz in the 90's , Larry was itching to create a new sound. It began in the fall of 2002 . It was a power rock group in the beginning with 2 guitars . But several instruments have been added in the last couple of years to reveal a different sounding music . An ever changing evolving sound . No rules were applied, and still do not exist in their song writing. With Pat Cox on Base, they have settled into a natural rhythm . Pat brings hard rockin bass lines , with an abstract style to the mix. Sparky Parker of "The Rising" has added a soulful hardrockin vibe to everything Mustard . Be sure , and catch 'The Rising" at a venue near you . Carlos Johnson lends a worldly flare to this rounded out mix with his unique percussion style. Literally writing songs from their life experience's , and memories has been their approach to writing songs . Alternate tuning , and playing in strange modal textures have now set the stage for a completely different approach to music . This music has no boundaries , and changes genres from song to song . You will be challenged to put them in just 2 different categories of music .
Larry White was born in Athens Tx. , and raised for the most part in San Antonio , Tx after stints as a child in The San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area , and attending grade school in New Orleans , La , as well as Uvalde, Tx , before settling again in San Antonio , and graduating from Tom C. Clark High. Kevin Crenshaw was born in Denton Tx. But raised in Houston mostly all of his life. He attended Baylor university on a Music scholarship , and work as a Factory Rep in outside Sale's . Gardner Headrick , born , and raised in Houston Tx. has played in a couple of different local bands including "Sneakyhurl" for a while , and presently in "Algae". Gardner has a daughter Kaitlan , and a son Travis . Carlos Johnson can be seen playing all over town , as well as with the Fondue Monks, when he isn't teaching percusion somewhere . Don't be surprised to see Sparky Parker lighting up the stage on any given night all over Houston town , he is a site for sore eye's . Don't miss his Band "Bayou Monster" now playing several venues around the South.
Houston is a city big on culture . Funky Mustard like's to bring all of these cultural effects to the middle of what they create . With 5 completed Cd's the Jar get's thicker every time they play together . They can be seen playing in Houston @ Dan Electros Guitar bar where we they seem to have found a home for their unique sound , and style of music.
