You are driving down Route 66 with the sun shining overhead, a bead of sweat making its way from your forehead to your ear and carcasses of snakes baking below your radial tires. This is the aura that Funky Nashville creates. ..- TWANGVILLE...... Hitch A Ride is one of those CDs that you will want to listen to over and over again. ..- ROCK N WOLRD...... Maybe this all sounds like a great big mess. Well, it's anything but. In fact, it's rather undeniably beguiling. And leave it to three guys from Denmark to do the Americana thing better than just about any American you could name. ..- PLAGUE OF ANGELS...... the albums they're putting out are very different from everything the indie scene represents right now. it's not obscure, there are no electronic beeps or blips, and not even any synths. it's pure rock, with classic influences and deep deep roots quite obviously implanted in the rich rock history of their Tennesse namesake. ..- NOISE FOR TOASTER...... Funky Nashville are neither funky, nor Nashville-sounding. But with horn accentuations, lush background vocals, and a cool, sauntering lyrical delivery set to a Wild West galloping drum beat, Hitch a Ride's title track single kicks off the Denmark group's first American debut with influences galore. ..- PERFECT PORRIDGE...... Beginning with a desert rock cowboy riff and shifting gears into a pop-rock nod to Brit-pop with haunting vocals, Funky Nashville has all the chops. ..- SMOTHER MAGAZINE...... This track from Danish band Funky Nashville sounds like it belongs on a Taratino score. Except vocalist Sverre Stein Nielsen kind of reminds me of an indie pop version of James Taylor.. ..- THE LARRY PAGE...... Presenting with a concept recalling the Peter Gunn Theme and Quentin Tarantino movie soundtrack choices, there's a distinct romance with the Old West flavoring the album and certainly serving as a muse. Add this fascination to a Britpop influence, and the result is most certainly unique. ..- INSIDE PULSE...... I believe that there are many here, in America who truly enjoy a strong country song, even a pop-country song, but are deluded due to the demonizing influence that Clear Channel and other corporate influences have had on the genre.
