Quantcast VERTIGO%20JAZZ%20PROJECTQuantcast Photobucket .. .. Justin W. Powell is currently the keyboard player for acoustic rockers The John Wasem Band, Vertigo Jazz Project, Ali Baba's Tahini, and fusion/prog ensemble Land of Atlantis. He also works as a studio musician in the Chicago, IL, and Western North Carolina areas. As a young person, Justin Powell studied classical piano and organ for 14 years, with the likes of Andrew Walker, Drucilla Engle, Duncan MacMillan, and other prominent instructors in the Orlando, FL area. He also studied voice with Murray Summerville, former organist and choirmaster at Harvard University. For the last 5 years, Justin has studied with IAJE award winning jazz composer and performer, Pavel Wlosok at Western Carolina University. During the last 5 years he has also shared the stage with members of: The Count Basie Orchestra, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Umphrey's Mcgee, Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, Josh Phillips Folk Festival, Josh Blake, Mother Vinegar, hip-hop artists Dirty5Thirty, Stellar Road, Afromotive, 56 Hope Road, and The Hue. On the jazz front he has performed with jazz greats Bobby Watson (solo artist ;Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers), Gary Smulyan (solo artist; Village Vangaurd), Mike Mcgirk, drummer Jon Riley(Miles Davis ,Woody Herman, Vangaurd Jazz Orchestra, Bob Mintzer, etc.), Raquelle Whitside- Scott (vocalist for USAF 'Falconaires' Band for 10 years), Chris Cheek (Bill Frisell, Brad Meldhau, & Rutter), and Andrew Clausen (Ray Charles, many Broadway shows). Justin has performed with all of these musicians in clinics as well. Justin W. Powell has been a major player in the Western North Carolina music scene doing a two year run as solo pianist at Spring St. Café in Sylva, NC. Listed in Justin's top friends you will find bands he's recorded with, performed with, as well as bands he likes. VERTIGO JAZZ PROJECT is a relatively new acid jazz ensemble that plays in the Asheville area and features Patrick "Pajamas" Thortenson on bass, Preston Cate on guitar, Justin W. Powell keyboards, and Sean Mason on drums. Playing 99% original music, VERTIGO JAZZ PROJECT has wowed the Asheville scene, with reviews in the Mountain Xpress. The JOHN WASEM BAND is a conglomerate of rising stars, which can easily be put side by side with the best, both locally and nationally. The present line-up includes Matthew Longbons (bass), Mike Mirro (drums), Justin Powell (keys) and Marcus Rezak (electric guitar). Together, they have played such major Chicago venues as the House of Blues, Double Door, Martyrs’, Kinetic Playground, The Abbey Pub, Cubby Bear and many more clubs across the midwest. In addition, JWB has toured both coasts and was a resident performer at the historic Wise Fools Pub for the past 4 years. John Wasem Band is currently working hard on a follow up album, and Land of Atlantis will be recording at IV Lab studios in march. Formed in 2007, LAND OF ATLANTIS is made up of some of the region's finest young musicians. This top-notch instrumental jazz/rock fusion group's lineup includes: on Rhythm guitar Dan Rucinski, bassist Josh Hanchar, drummer Nemanja Djorovic, his identical twin brother/lead guitarist Nikola Djorovic, and Justin w. Powell keyboards. Each are talented musicians years beyond their age. Nikola Djorovic is one of only seven finalists to compete in the national round of Guitar Center's 2005 Guitarmaggedon contest and has appeared in Guitar World Magazine. Bringing together just about every style of music into one group of musicians with compositions that make sense to the listener is why Land of Atlantis is one of the few unique bands Chicago has to offer. From Metal to Latin Jazz, through world music around to bebop and back; Land of Atlantis is a band to watch in the coming years. ALI BABA'S TAHINI is a popular South Bend, IN, power trio formed in 1998 by KARL ENGELMANN (vocals, bass, sitar), JAKE CINNINGER (vocals, guitar), and STEVE KROJNIEWSKI (drums). The band dabbled in several styles of music, including hard rock, jazz, progressive, folk, reggae, blues, and more. The band quickly developed a large fanbase in the midwestern United States due mainly to their energetic live performances. For many of their early shows, the band featured an up and coming UMPHREY'S McGEE as their opening act. In 1999, they released the critically acclaimed "Hopi Champa" album as their fanbase continued to swell. However, the original lineup was altered soon thereafter as Karl Engelmann left the band to pursue outside projects. He was replaced by a longtime friend of the band, KAHLIL SMYILE. With the depatrue of Engelmann (one of the band's main songwriters), Jake Cinninger's compositions were featured front and center on the band's second album "Limbo Boots," released in 2000. By the summer of that year, Cinninger disbanded Ali Baba's Tahini to join Umphrey's McGee, and the rest is history as Umphrey's have become one of the country's most popular and respected live bands. Smylie went on to form the SQUIRM ORCHESTRA with Brett Padgett. Four years after the breakup, in 2004, the original lineup of the Ali Baba's Tahini reunited (sans a one-off reunion concert in 2003) in the North Carolina mountains to record their first album of the new millennium, "Rockstars and Lawnmowers." After a year of production, engineering, and mixing by Cinninger, the album was finally released in 2005. Just three months later, Engelmann formed MOTHER VINEGAR, a hard rock band centered in Asheville, NC, that, along with Umphrey's McGee, helps keep the Ali Baba's Tahini concert catalog alive today. STEVE KROJNIEWSKI is currently drumming with HOODOO GROOVE, a five-piece group featuring drums, saxophone, trumpet, guitar, and bass. He also plays with a African drumming group called RHYTHM WORKS and has been teaching yoga for two years now (www.truebalanceyoga.com). In 2006-2008, Jake, Karl (now on guitar), Krojo and new members JEFF HINKLE (bassist for Mother Vinegar) and Justin W. Powell (keyboards Vertigo Jazz Project, John Wasem Band, Land of Atlantis) have recorded a new album of material in Niles, MI, to be released in spring of 2009. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for upcoming tour dates!
