Future Echoes is the type of band you would expect from four guys whose collective CD collection spans over 1,500 unique titles. Their music is the answer to questions like, What would it sound like if the Tea Party spent three months listening to Incubus and Queens of the Stone Age? What if Dream Theater only wrote 4 minute songs and hired Trent Reznor to produce? What would happen if Tool and the Red Hot Chili Peppers traded band members and invited Primus to a house party? If I Mother Earth and King’s X challenged Porcupine Tree and Muse to a cage match, who would smuggle in the brass knuckles and how long would it be before the ref started singing Rush songs?
In 2004, Ed Pringle (guitar) and Erin Dobbin (bass) started writing and playing music together in an Edmonton band called S.O.S. At the same time, far away, in sunny Winnipeg, Manitoba, Ken Ferguson (vocals) was trying out his own ideas as a member of Deadset Unit. Three years later, by a weird stroke of mutual fortune, Ken found himself auditioning (and auditioning and auditioning) for Erin and Ed’s new band, the soon‑to‑be named Future Echoes.
Less than a year later, the final piece of the puzzle dropped into place with the addition of Kregg Bracegirdle on drums. Kregg had tried out with a few other bands in the past but had never found the mix of complexity and accessibility he was looking for. Future Echoes turned out to be that combination, and Kregg’s commitment, rock solid groove, and positive attitude turned out to be exactly what the doctor had been ordering for Ed, Erin and Ken. The band was whole.
In November 2008, FE teamed up with the mighty Stew Kirkwood of Sound Extractor Studios, and over the course of the next 7 months, Future Echoes’ debut album took shape. With this disc, FE is out to prove that rock still has a few tricks up its sleeve. The music refuses to be predictable or pretentious or ironic. Most importantly it refuses to be boring. No two songs are the same, yet it’s clear in listening to the album that all the music was written by a single band.
That band is Future Echoes, and the album is 20 of 10.
