Each life is so very different than any other, we have innumerable similarities and innumerable differences; which outweighs the other is a subject for debate. What is clear is that only a small portion of these similarities and differences are known to us. Given this, it is my belief we know little to nothing about who we are and who we are dealing with at any given time. When assessing another being all we have are fragments, the bearers of these fragments have fragmentary knowledge of our being; fragments we may ourselves be unaware of…certainly they have an alien perspective. Yet given all this uncertainty we still move ahead. Trial and error guide us. We operate on a flawed map of reality, often without a clear goal. When we have a goal even if we are consciously trying to move towards it, we succeed or not and base our assumptions about the accuracy of our world map based on these "rewards". However our success or failure may have a cause effect chain we are completely ignorant of. Yet this is how we formulate opinions. Wars are fought over opinions. Decisions are made based on opinions. Friendships are made and lost, lovers taken and abandoned based on these instincts. Science at least admits that at the core all of its beliefs are simply theory. We do not understand the most fundamental things about matter and energy, we can however accurately predict to degree of accuracy how it will behave, to the best of our ability to perceive, under a given set of circumstances. Newtonian physics will build a sky scraper or allow you to fly to the moon, but we know that it is not an accurate model of reality. It's more like a schematic.
The sorts of laboratory conditions we are blessed with in physics do not hold so well in the realm of the psyche. Humanity examining humanity and how it relates to humanity and society which is composed of humanity; how is a human undergoing this self examination of species supposed to determine what is meritus? Yet people do beleive in what they beleive. What I'm saying is we walk by our best friends unmet everyday, we shie away from the most perfect lover because we don't see them next to us. This is not to say that we cannot construct a model of belief/thought/behavior which will bring us our desired ends. Psychology is like a physics of the mind. Salesmen and self help gurus and dating advice columnists can construct simple mental mechanisms which will produce predictable results within a statistically significant portion of the population. Still "Science don't know!". I guess it all boils down to means and ends, and what it is you want. I don't know, but I find it horrifying how far we all really are from each other, and how alike, how mechanical, how willing to deceive ourselves to achieve, and by the necessity to achieve. I also think its beautiful the way we call out to each other, that we survive. The same things which make me aware, which fascinate me, terrify me. Still its better than nothing…until its not…then the universe blinks…then light moves on the water…then things are born…there is no stopping. Try not to hurt unless you are hurting, then hurt..there is no stopping…don't stoop over in the rain…smile at the moon…it's the same moon with a thousand thousand eyes cast on it…for a thousand thousand and one there is no less moon…there is one more.
I've pretty much given up my evil ways to become a stay-at-home dad, but I'm living in Ashland now, and if you ever find yourself passing through town I'm sure we could get up to some wickedness!
