Raised by chickens in Gloucestershire, singer songwriter Gabi Garbutt returned to Camden town London, the place of her birth, in the autumn of 2007 and started a band.
Bringing together musicians from Italy, Australia, Israel and Southampton, who now all reside between Mornington Crescent and Kentish town in North London, Gabi Garbutt and the Breadstealers were hatched.
With Lorenzo Levrini on drums, Martin Tong on bass, Aaron Kazab ..boards and Chris Bramley on lead, the band began renting the ears of Londoners, stealing their hearts and bread in equal measure.
The band draw their set from a collection of Blakeian, philosophical, and passionate songs honed by songwriter Gabi. Her song writing style has been influenced by all manner of thinkers from “Baudelaire to Paddington bear” and you can expect lyrics of a poetic nature, with a lust for life set against a melancholy backdrop and a desire to escape from the norm.
The band play a curious mix of sound meshing the spirit of the punk poets, Patti Smith, Richard Hell, Television and the Libertines, with blues inspired licks, Dylanesque keyboards and a tumbling kaleidoscope of styles.
Their name, the Breadstealers, with it’s roguish, ragamuffin feel, also betrays 19th century influences, being the name of a book about the Chartist movement which denotes a political edge to some of Gabi’s work.
By Easter 2008, the band had won the competitive heat of battle of the bands at Dingwalls and they have now played regular gigs at rock landmarks such as the Proud Galleries Camden, Dingwalls and the 12 bar club, delighting at following the boot prints of Joe Strummer, Keith Richards and Pete Doherty.
Gabi, Chilean, Slavic and English in ethnicity and feature, is also still active on the acoustic and poetry scene, playing solo at the likes of the Spice of Life and Y Tuesday between band engagements.
Walk down Camden high street of a night and you may well hear Gabi’s distinctive voice floating on the air across the lock, whether rocking out with the boys or perched on a stall with an acoustic guitar, this songbird is worth catching.

How's it going? Fancy some of this... Great bands + guest DJ + indoor fireworks display + bonfire toffee + toffee apples + Free entry + much more = good times! See you at the bar Broccoli x
I'm missing my Breadstealers! :( Looking through your calendar I see the problem - a lot of your gigs seem to be on Tuesday nights. I work early on Wednesdays, making going out the previous night difficult. :(
We shall find a way around this! ;) See you all soon.
