Stop Porn Culture is planning our second training on how to present
our feminist anti-pornography slideshow.
The training will be held at the University of Texas in Austin,
January 25-27, 2008. It will start at 5PM on Friday and finish up at
noon on Sunday. We are asking for a $50 donation to cover our costs,
but this can waived for those who need it. Limited scholarships for
travel and expenses are available.
Come and get the experience, knowledge, and confidence to talk
publicly against pornography in your community. The training will
include some in-depth presentations on topics such as:
- Background on the economic industry that is pornography
- First Amendment and other free speech issues
- Women in the industry
- The question of "alternate" images
We will also have a long session of practicing Q & As in small groups.
The training will end with a session on self-care for presenters and
activists since, as many of you know, this work can be grueling.
For lodging options, the cheapest and closest hotel is Rodeway Inn at
(512) 477-6395 .
It's $60 a night, and a twenty minute walk to the training location.
We are trying to find free, community options in Austin, so if that's
something you'd need, please be in touch.
The slideshow is our first line of offense in the battle we must wage
to reclaim this culture from the misogyny, racism and brute power of
the pornographers. Come join us in our struggle for a violence-free
world.

Gail
Dines lectures across the country with two dynamic and thought-provoking slide presentations.
"Sex(ism), Identity and Intimacy in a Pornographic Culture"
From Internet pornography to MTV, popular culture bombards us with sexualized images of idealized women and men, and conveys powerful messages that help shape our sexuality. These pictures jump off the screen and into our culture and are now so commonplace that they seep into our gender identity, our body image and especially our intimate relationships. The result is not a more liberated, edgy sexuality, but a mass produced vision of sex that is profoundly sexist – a vision that limits our ability to create authentic, equal relationships that are free of violence and degradation. In this powerful multi-media presentation, Dr. Gail Dines uses examples from pornography, magazines, television shows, and movies to explore how masculinity and femininity are shaped by a consumer- driven image-based culture, and the ways public images spill over into our most private worlds.
"Sexy or Sexist? Images of Women and Men in Popular Culture"
On a daily basis we are bombarded with media images that suggest that sexual harassment is flirting, sexual assault is foreplay and rape is hot sex. Using examples from magazines, ads, films, MTV and movies, Gail Dines illustrates how images of violence against women are so commonplace that we, as a society, are becoming desensitized to the messages these images embody. Drawing upon research by sociologists, psychologists, feminists and media scholars, Dines will examine how these images affect the way we think about ourselves as males and females, as sexual beings and as potential victims and victimizers.
Note: This lecture does not contain pornography.

Testimonials to Gail Dines' Presentations:
Gail Dines presents one of the most intelligent, best-researched analyses of the frighteningly vast and violent industry of pornography that I have ever seen or read. Her impassioned treatment of the subject is matched by her intelligence, scholarship and clarity.
-Robin Morgan, Author, Activist, and internationally renowned Speaker
Dr. Dines brilliantly integrates feminist and sociological theory with the graphic visual images of pornography. Her presentation clearly demonstrates the function of pornography as violent cultural propaganda against women.
-Dr. Wendy Stock, Department of Psychology, Texas A&M University
This is an extremely powerful presentation of the demeaning portrayal of women in the mainstream media literature. Professor Dines' sociological analysis makes the show highly appropriate for use in college settings.
-Dr. Estelle Disch, Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Massachusetts, Boston
With straightforward facts, figures and pictures, Gail Dines holds her audience spellbound.
-Betsy Warrior, activist and author of the Battered Women's Directory

Who I'd like to meet: Other activists against sexism.
Hi Gail, Congratulations on the great success of the anti-porn conference in Boston last March. I wish you and Stop Porn Culture all the best in your continued important activism.
Dear Gail, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done for the anti-pornography and feminist causes over the years. Your fierce persistence and determination are truly an inspiration to women and girls everywhere, myself very definitely included! :-) It was wonderful to see you again in Boston at the March conference for Stop Porn Culture. (Feminist Anti-Pornography Movement). What an accomplishment! Both of your talks were amazing, so I hope all the visitors here watch your videos. :-) Thank you also for your friendship, kindness, your great generosity, and your support over the past few years of my own anti-pornography feminist activism. I will be forever grateful. :-) Best wishes to you with your ultimate anti-porn book that you are writing right now. I'm sure it will be incredible! As soon as it is out I plan on enthusiastically promoting it everywhere I can. :-)
