Gail Priest is a Sydney-based sound artist interested in releasing the hidden melodies and broken beats found in raw sonic material. Restlessly pacing between music and sound art, her atmospheric explorations incorporate dirty machinic rhythms and bass-heavy pulsations contrasted with glassy cascades and occasional slippery vocals.
After misguided excursions in the 90s of the neo-folk singer/songwriter variety, she embraced laptoppery in 2001 and since then has performed at experimental music events and festivals in Australia.
More recently the voice is forcing itself back into the mix — contorted, cut-up, crunchy – but somehow always sweetly. More on these experiments soon...
Her debut album imaginary conversations in reverberant rooms came out in 2006 and is available at www.gailpriest.net
Idiosyncratic and indefinable imaginary conversations in reverberant rooms weaves broken melodies and digital debris into potent atmospheres and near-future fantasies.
Gail also writes soundscores for contemporary performance, dance and video art for a range of collaborators.
I have a new project called prettylittlepaw and I thought you might like it. The first release, WIRE=WAVE, is a collection of experimental music built from what could roughly be described as field recordings of guitars.
Hi Gail... just thought I'd drop by to say I'm really enjoying the swampflower tracks you've recently posted. In fact, I'd actually just put on imaginary conversations... on my stereo tonight here in my Bordeaux apartment, logged into myspace and saw that you'd posted new tracks.. strange coincidence? Hope you're well...
