You seem to have a good head on your shoulders, why not leave it alone fora little while tell them both your honest opinion and thoughts.
The importance in a relationship is trust and persavierence. Any relationship not just romance comes down to working as a team, you both have to put the effort in and just the same amount.
Im sure ste and dennis do adore you but you have to ask yourself will they still be there for in the end.
And ask for the ruining of friendships it depends on how the relationships pan out. I am still friends with some of my exs, but you both have to come to agreements, you get ex's who just dont want to know you once you split but you just have to realise, if they want to walk away thats there dision lol. You have done everything you can to try and keep that friendship as long  as your hearts in the right place. I went out with my number one BEST friend years ago only for a matter of weeks. And true to begin with things seemed odd but due to us both talking about it openly and beeing able to joke about it made it easier and we are still great mates to this day. It all depends on the hurt of both people and so on. dennis is cool as hell he wouldnt drop you as a friend. And steve, nice guy in some respects but hard to read. As long as your honest and they are to i see no reason after some time you wouldnt be able to make a decision. Just trust your heart. We all face heartache its how we move on that makes us who we are.
