A low-budget Scottish movie has had its run extended at one of the best-known cinema chains in the country.
After its opening weekend, following a release on Friday, GAMERZ is to have its screening continue for at least another week, by Cineworld at its Edinburgh and Glasgow venues.
What’s more, distributors, Guerilla Films, is to soon have it being shown at the Belmont Cinema in Aberdeen and the Cameo in Edinburgh.
Directed and written by Robbie Fraser and produced by Paul Gavin - also its cinematographer - GAMERZ was shot on High Definition video on an initial budget of £300,000 and was co-financed by Scottish Screen and stv, under the New Found Films scheme.
It tells the story of “a bitter, geeky love triangle which takes place in the Dungeons and Dragons Society of Glasgow University”.
It has screened in film festivals all over the world as well as achieving success on DVD in the USA before ‘coming home’ to cinema audiences in Scotland.
Says Gavin: "This is really fantastic news. Cineworld has looked at the audience response and the number of bums on seats in the all-important opening weekend. They took a chance on backing a wee independent film like GAMERZ in the first instance and we're really glad that their gamble has paid off to the extent that they're keeping us around. We're also looking forward to bringing our gang of friendly goblins to Aberdeen in March, so those quines had better watch out."
The film has also had a warm critical reception. Writing in The Sunday Herald, film critic, Alan Morrison said: “The film combines nerdy charm, playground humour and technical polish in a way that should make Hollywood executives choke on their stale slices of American Pie. GAMERZ is like Lord of the Rings remade for Chewin' The Fat, with recognisable Glasgow locations and a supporting cast of bams, neds and fannies.”
