About me:
The idea for GANGHUT is that of instigated collaboration, it takes in socialist work ethics, unification and utopian ideologies.
In 2004 GANGHUT first took place at Spike Island in Bristol as a result of a residency by Kevin Reid. During this time he began to make sculptural and film works concerning hideaways and group mentality. From this he worked towards an installation and event under the moniker GANGHUT. The initial core Gang was assembled from eight artists (Jason Nelson, Stephen Murray, Graeme Roger, Andrew French, Luke Collins, Mark Hunter, Pete Dibdin, Amy Marletta and Derek Lodge). Together GANGHUT created an event in the main space at Spike Island, which was built over a 7-day period in a 24/7 gallery live-in environment.
The structures were designed as modular multi purpose units, for instance the sleeping hut where all of GANGHUT slept for a week was adapted into a double screen cinema and stage for the weekend that the event was open to the public. The watchtower was also adapted to house a loudspeaker unit, DJ booth and was connected to do live broadcasts over the Internet
A wider pool of artists, musicians and general public was sourced and donated time, artworks, tools and instruments for either help with the build or to show or perform over the 3-day event. Throughout the whole build and event a strong identity for the project could be seen with all the GANGHUT members wearing the same uniform both in the event proximity and outside in public drawing attention to the festival.
Following the success of the project GANGHUT and Spike Island are currently producing a full colour 200-page publication, which will be launched in February 2007 in Bristol.
More recently GANGHUT were invited to take part in the Containers Village exhibition as part of the wider Next Wave Festival in Melbourne during the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Due to the logistics of the show a scaled down GANGHUT comprising of Jason Nelson, Kevin Reid and Stephen Murray travelled over. When there we acquired two Australian GANGHUT members, Joe and Karen Haughey to help with the show. This being a vital component of GANGHUT, being able to bring in new people as a situation requires depending in location, skills and desire to be involved.
The exhibition worked differently as we were sharing a space with 43 other artists groups, we are not an artists group or collective we are a Gang, so we couldn’t dictate the entire space. However within, outside and on top of our container we built several different spaces that could be utilised in different ways. Within the container we built a white cube space and exhibited around 50 artworks donated to us by folk in Scotland, they also gave us £2 sponsorship which we used to buy our tool kit once over there. In return we displayed and distributed their work to the Australian public, getting a photo of each Australian with their chosen piece.
On top of the container we built our GANGHUT and flag and banner poles asserting our presence in the large container space. From up their we could chose to talk to the public or simply get on with the process of drawing and decorating the structures in response to the daily experience of being in Australia, from cooking kangaroo on a Barbie, going to state functions and having a beer with the tri-athletes Marcus, Willie and Stanley from the Solomon Islands. In a fitting end to the show as we broke down the entire GANGHUT we cut all build materials into small squares, all surface having being worked upon with the distillation of our experiences, we gave away every last scrap of MDF, length timber, fittings, fixtures and tools to the passing public. In the event it turned the last day into a massive free car-boot sale.
