"We don't believe in art for art's sake. Art should be used as a tool for democratisation, rather than something you buy to match the curtains."
- Fitriani, artist and member of Taring Padi collective in Yogyakarta, Central Java
Indonesia is a land of contradictions. Extraordinary beauty and tourist destinations contrast with a complex and often turbulent political situation. But underneath all this is a thriving underground art scene full of young people who work in collectives making video art, printmaking, painting, textiles and performance art.
'Gangways' is a documentary that follows the Gang Festival - an unprecedented exchange between Indonesian and Australian artists - set against a backdrop of urban and rural beauty, contemporary music and an unending kaleidoscope of cutting edge artwork. Follow the surprises and struggles of these underground artists as they explore their diversity and seek to discover that which unites them.
