WESTFEST 2005
We arrived at the Royal Bath & West Showground, to my surprise the car park was just a field! We decided to have a bit of a chill before we went in, as there was a small queue. I was surprised that there was not a bigger queue or more cars, but for once we were there on time! Which meant almost 10 hours of raving!
Nearly 9 o`clock we decided to go and queue up, as there was only a small queue. Thanks to 4clubbers I got in on the guest list! We only queued for about ten minutes. We had to then show security our tickets, and were let through the main gates. I thought great, that was quick and simple, but soon found out that there was a searching area which was converted from a warehouse of some kind!
The searching was fast and the queue moved quickly. There were drugs and weapon amnesty bins provided, not that I saw them being used! I was then second in line to get searched, the person in front of me was thoroughly searched! I was glad to see security being so conscientious, but when it came to my turn I was let straight through! The security were carrying wand metal detectors which didn`t seem to be being used, which was also worrying!
I could here MC Storm on the mic coming from a cow shed! Basically the whole place was a bit like being on a farm with warehouses, cow sheds, etc. You could imagine it being a place where illegal raves were once held in the good old days! My excitement was reaching paramount, so we all headed for the Hardcore Arena!
As soon as you set foot in the main arena, the first thing you noticed was the heat! It was overwhelming, not surprisingly as there was probably over 2000 ravers in there havin` it large, as only Hardcore ravers know how! We made our way down to the front of the arena, through the crammed room with everyone going nuts! Once down at the front DJ Kickback was on along with MC Storm.
I have never seen one of Kickback`s sets, and to say the least I was very impressed, probably one of my favourite sets of the night! Some of the tunes that were played were: `Slide Away,` `Heartbeatz, and also a remix of the Trance classic `Liberation by Matt Darey,` which was a brilliant remix and went down very well with everyone. By this time everyone was going nuts, especially with MC Storm in full swing, the place was jam packed and absolutely rocking. ... horns and whistles could be heard everywhere and ravers raised their hands in the air on Storm`s command!
Just when I thought it couldn`t get any better ... it did when Storm was joined on the stage by MC Whizzkid! With Whizzkid`s arrival, a problem arose ... there was only one microphone, so they had to take it in turns on the mic, which was great fun to see! Normally Storm and Whizzkid just flow off each other, but with there only being one mic, this threw a somewhat spanner in the works, but was soon overcome! Storm & Whizzkid`s taking turns on the mic kind of turned into a battle, but they still managed to flow off each others lyrics with quick passing of the mic! Other tunes that were played once Whizzkid was on stage were: `End of Time` by Hixxy and Whizzkid, which had everyone going wild as Whizzkid MC`d to the lyrics, and `Fly Away` by Visa, plus many others.
It was a great set by Kickback, hopefully I will get to see many more sets from him in the future too! His mixing was great, as was his tune selection, although there were a few Raverbaby tunes in his set, and to top it off we had Storm and Whizzkid too! Near the end of his set though we decided to make a move to the Main Arena as Breeze & Styles were on next!

DJ Kickback started out like many do as a Hardcore obbsessed raver, spending his every penny on raving, tape packs & MA2 jackets, when he managed to gain accsess to a set of decks, he took to them like a duck to water and then went on to become a keen collecter of Hardcore vinyl.
His first break came when he was DJing at a friends Birthday rave in banwell, near w.s.m, there was a stage dancer there from the local Hardcore giants GBH and got a demo for there mixing comp, a few weeks passed and he got the call telling him he had won the comp and was given what was to be the first of many bookings form GBH 11th august 1999 @ the now lgendary Depot, Bristol, the set was a succses and he gained his first residency.
GBH was to be the springboard to many other up and coming Hardcore nights that were starting out in bristol like Delerium, Absolute Old Skool & his own weekly event "Inspiration" which he co promoted with frends Shane (Yeats) & Sam Middle in weston super mare.
The Hardcore scene at the time was at a bit of a low so to keep busy as a DJ he started playing Hard Dance/Trance for promoters like Slinky, Bunker (shepton Mallet) & Catch 22 amongst others, but he was soon able to gain regular Hardcore work when the scene started to make a comback in 2002.
in 2003 he began work in a record shop in weston super mare called Spin Central for Ralph Mignano which allowed Kickback to learn more about the industry & how things really worked, also gave him acceses to alot of the new material that was coming from the new revamped Hardcore scene at the time.
He also started to run youth workshops form the shop, travaling round the many differnt youth centres of his home town teaching kids how to mix, and gaining funding for there own equipment.
Around this time the now very busy Kickback baged a spot writing Hardcore reviews for underground dance music publication "Upfront" which lasted till 2006 when the magazine sadly ceesed.
2005 was a proud moment for Kickback when he and his team (Sammy D, Sam Cradock & Ralph Mignano) came 3rd in the Hardcore Heaven Awards catogory for "best record shop" next to giants of the indusrty like HMV & IMO.
2005-6 was a also a fantastic few years for kickback when he gained sets at some of the countrys biggest Hardcore parties like Slammin Vinyl, Hardcore Heaven & Uproar as well as holding down residencys at events like Absolute Hardcore/old skool, Totally Ardcore & Q-Bic to name a few.
Recently he has maintained a steady profile playing guest spots at venues up and down the country along side his residencys for Atomic, Totally Ardcore & Extreme Vision.
Over the last two years he has been working very hard on his studio skills with his old friend Dave Grier (of E-Lab-Rat), and started a college course in Music Technology at Weston College to gain extra skills in the studio.
here you will find details of his gigs and audio of his work...Enjoy!

Your layers of absinthe and torsion form concretions of hyper-alimentation. Your intoxicating reflection can but incorporate freely into the powerful surface of a disintegrating mirror set afloat upon a swarm of locusts. Your beauty is equal to the smoothness of a polished gem. You have not yet reached the height of your creativity. I keep searching for you between the cushions. Your eyes show as many deep and full shades of fire as a volcano in heat. Your essence is equal to the beauty of a galaxy. The skin I shed is a perfume that makes water bubbles so terribly clear to me. Your beauty is multiplexed in contemplation of your multidimensional effervescence. I love your eyes, I know they can stare through my thoughts. Entranced by the sweet harmony of your lips, I gaze beyond reason to find the oasis of your brilliant soul. If I could have just one wish, it would be to wake up to your songs in the morning. I sense wild vapors of sweet champagne in your larynx. Your reflections bring happiness that rends naked glass.
