Irish Flautist Gary Arbuthnot has captivated audiences throughout the world with his beautiful tone, flawless technique and outstanding musicianship. Equally at home in the fields of classical, pop or jazz he has performed in many of the great musical halls including the South Bank Centre, London and the Waterfront Hall, Belfast. He has also appeared at the Stratford International Flute Festival, Banff Festival for the Arts, Cheltenham Festival, Chichester Festivities, and the Northlands Festival.
During 1998 he was a Prize-winner at both the Markneukirchen and Carl Nielsen International Flute Competitions, and was awarded the Meaker Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Other prizes include the BBC Radio Three Young Artists Forum, the Albert Cooper Flute Competition, an English-Speaking Union Scholarship, and awards from the Hattori Foundation, Countess of Munster Musical Trust, Claudio Abbado European Young Musicians Trust, Foundation for Sport and the Arts and a nomination for the prestigious Hamada award at the 1997 Edinburgh International Festival as part of the Lys Ensemble.
Gary Arbuthnot was born in Antrim, Northern Ireland, and studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, McGill University, Montreal, and privately with James Galway. He has worked as principal flute with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Opera de Lyon, France, and the Sao Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, Brazil. Despite his busy touring schedule he still finds time to return home each year to give back to his own community. Recently he gave concerts in Belfast for Save the Children, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Northern Ireland Centre for Integrated Education and Live Music Now, Ireland. He has also performed for various members of the British Royal Family.
Gary’s musical interests are very diverse and his shows encompass works from pop and classical standards, through classic movie hits from the golden era of MGM, to a few toe tapping tunes from the Irish Isle.
