The acclaimed New York-based guitarist, composer and Grammy-nominated songwriter Gary Lucas recently joined forces with renowned Spanish author and spoken-word artist Bruno Galindo to produce a unique fusion of psychedelic guitar, electronics and intense and intimate spoken word poetry, both live and in the studio. The duo's musico-literary alchemy worked magic at their debut shows in October 2008 in México City and NYC-- selling-out the national Poesía En Voz Alta Festival at an outdoor show at the Casa del Lago, where they held forth before a packed house in the midst of a sensational thunder and lightning storm, and astonishing the crowds in New York at both the ultra-hip Bowery Poetry Club, and as part of the underground performance series held at the landmark Gershwin Hotel with their sonic sorcery.
After these successful live appearances Gary and Bruno decided to capture the mystic energy of their live performances in a very intimate recording session held last October in New York City, produced by Jason Candler (Gods and Monsters) tentatively called “The Black Paintings”. Plans are afoot for Gary and Bruno's next international appearances coupled with the release of their debut album on the Diogenes label of Mexico. They love casting their collective spell together-- and look forward to playing all over the world at festivals and venues devoted to experimental, high-risk avant-garde music and literature.

Gary Lucas tours the world relentlessly both solo and with several different ensembles, including his longtime band Gods and Monsters, whose ranks once included the late great singer Jeff Buckley. Gary co- wrote two of Jeff Buckley’s most famous hits, “Grace” and “Mojo Pin”, which later became the title track and the opening track on Jeff’s double platinum Sony album “Grace” – which MOJO magazine recently named the 1 Modern Classic Rock Album. Gary and Jeff’s early collaborations can also be heard on the recent Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas album “Songs to No One”, which charted internationally with worldwide sales approaching 100,000. Other notable recent Lucas releases include “The Edge of Heaven”, an album of Gary Lucas’ lush arrangements of classic Chinese pop songs from the 1930s, which was 1 on the World Music charts in Canada and received rave reviews around the world, from Rolling Stone to the Hong Kong Music Weekly. Gary’s compilation of the best of his early band and solo work entitled “Operators are Standing By” garnered a 4-star MOJO review: “This album confirms Gary Lucas as THE psychedelic guitarist for the post-modern set.” Most of Gary’s extensive back catalog as well as his current releases were recently licensed for digital distribution by IODA, and are now available on iTunes and on digital portals worldwide.
Gary continues to lead his longtime NYC-based band Gods and Monsters – currently a super-group based around Gary’s guitar playing, singing, and songwriting, featuring Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads), Billy Ficca (Television) and Ernie Brooks (Talking Heads), along with Jason Candler and Joe Hendel They have a new live DVD and new studio album wrapped . Gary is also working intensively with the UK Indian vocalist Najma Akhtar in a new world music project, which they debuted recently in NYC to very favorable response, and the pair has just finished recording their debut album. Gary is also involved in an electronica project known as Wild Rumpus with the UK- based DJ Cosmo (Colleen Murphy), and the duo released 2 very successful 12 inch singles this year. BRUNO GALINDO is a spanish writer, journalist and artist. Recognised as one of the most original and eclectic poets of his generation, he has been credited for revitalizing the spoken word scene in spanish, a sphere where he’s considered one of the most innovative artists. He took part in the acclaimed avant-garde rock & electronica tribute album “LEOPOLDO MARÍA PANERO”, devoted to the legendary schyzo-beatnik spanish poet. That album, recorded together with best selling spanish rock star BUNBURY, rock icon CARLOS ANN and spanish erotic cinema pioneer JOSÉ MARÍA PONCE, inspired the cult movie “UNA NOCHE CON PANERO”, which captures their performance together with the poet. Together with spanish electronica musician STRAND wrote and performed “NUSHU”, a spoken word concert and visual show related to that recently disappeared Chinese language. Sometimes he takes the stage for the unconventional ‘textjockey’ experience -djing words- “ELECTROSPOKEN”.
In the last few years Bruno Galindo had appeared in Spanish and Latin American scenarios with different musicians, writers, plastic and performance artists to recite his poetry in a high intense and unorthodox acting. In the last few years he opened and/or shared bill with Blixa Bargeld, Julian Cope, Arto Lindsay, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Amiri Baraka, John Giorno, Dennis Rollins and Hanif Kureishi in musical and literary festivals. He played in Palabra y Música, Experimentaclub, Cosmopoética, La Noche en Blanco, Kosmópolis, Sónar, FIB, Festimad, Hay Festival at Deià, FIL, Rock en Ñ, Book Fair at Guadalajara-México, Book Fair at Caracas, Territorios, WOMAD, La Mar de Músicas, Territorio Eléctrico and Poesía En Voz Alta among others.
He has recently collaborated with Spanish rock artists NACHO VEGAS and JAVIER CORCOBADO (“THINGS YOU WOULD PREFER NOT TO KNOW”, with CARLOS ANN and MARIONA AUPÍ (“ALBUM 2008”), with charismatic radio-drama mexican artist REY TRUENO Y SU ORQUESTA (“THE RETURN OF THE STOIC BIRD”), tropicalia legend from Brazil TOM ZÉ (with whom he’ll be featured in the movie “TOM ZÉ, FREE ASTRONAUT”), venezuelan avant-garde virtuoso pianist XAVIER LOSADA (“CRASHED AMBULANCE”) and ‘silent artist’ TRES (“LIVE AT THE MATADERO”).
His bibliography include his original afropoetry work “AFRICA EQUILÁTERA” (“HYENA MOONS”, “AFRICA FOR SECRET SOCIETIES” (Rafael Pérez Estrada Prize) and “DUNE 45”). The trilogy captures a strange and intense three year travelling through Africa which drew an exact equilateral triangle. His book “COMMUNICATING VESSELS” compiles 510 pages of conversation about the songwriting process with musicians as Prince, John Lee Hooker, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Perry Farrell, Angelo Badalamenti, Howie B, Arnaldo D. Baptista (Os Mutantes), David Byrne, Iggy Pop, Björk, Michael Franti, Curtis Mayfield, Trilok Gurtu, Khaled, Bill Laswell, Ali Farka Toure or Bono to name just a few. His 2007 release “KOREAN DIARIES” (Random House) tells about his scary experience in North Korea and travelling in the asian peninsula (that trip closes a cycle of articles in war territories such as Irak, Palestine, Sáhara...). More short stories, interviews and other texts are featured in collective books as “BABEL CITIZENS” and magazines such as Eñe or prestigious Granta.
Besides his stage/studio appearances, he recently curated the international exhibition held through internet from Spain CULTURAS2008, where he put together the talents of by Brian Eno, DJ Spooky, Talvin Singh, Yan Jun, Sierra Leone’s Refugee AllStars, Nortec Collective, Kevin Johansen and Arnaldo Antunes. BRUNO GALINDO es escritor, periodista y artista. Ha sido acreditado como uno de los revitalizadores de la poesía escénica y el spoken word en España. Ha participado en el renombrado proyecto de rock y electrónica de vanguardia “HOMENAJE A LEOPOLDO MARÍA PANERO”, dedicado al mítico poeta español. Este álbum, grabado junto a BUNBURY, CARLOS ANN y JOSÉ MARÍA PONCE, ha inspirado la película “UNA NOCHE CON PANERO”, que captura la actuación de todos ellos con el poeta.
