Gary Thomas was born and raised in Durban, South Africa in 1983. After completing a music degree at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, he moved to Cape Town in 2006 and started psychedelic Nu-Folk duo Cabins in the Forest with Andy Jamieson. The duo split in late 2008 to focus on solo work. Gary has always been focused as a solo artist and since January 2009 he has completed relentless Nationwide Tours of South Africa, playing to more than 30 different towns in the country, including all the Major Music Festivals.
Shortly after moving to Cape Town, Gary recorded his debut solo album “Wooden Boxes & Thought Hunting” whilst ‘Cabins’ was in development. The album was something of an underground gem in the Western Cape and was officially released in January at the start of his solo career.
Drawing inspiration from a wide spectrum of music, he combines the technical and theoretical elements of his teenage Classical and his University Jazz trainings, to produce a genre off Acoustic music that is unlike anything South Africa has seen before. From percussive finger- tapping, to virtuoso picking and violent strumming, his guitar work has earned praises like “masterful, wizardry, genius” in the press. Vocally, Gary manages to deliver an impressive range where his voice in one instant softly hovers and violently snarls in the next. A subtle use of Fx pedals and alternative techniques help create an uncanny tone and timbre. Using most of his body when he performs, he dedicates his left foot to a custom- made stomp box which emits a full bass boom and drives the music towards higher and more grandiose soundscapes.
