Washington DC's Gaslight Society is a new band that bridges the gap between modern garage rock and blues music. Their self-titled EP consists of six original songs, along with their unique, feedback-drenched interpretation of Charley Patton’s classic blues song “O Death.” It is available for download on iTunes and Amazon.com, and available for sale at http://cdbaby.com/cd/gaslightsociety.
Guitarist Steve Losey started playing music with singer Janet Pinkham in 2005 after she responded to his online ad looking for musicians “just as comfortable playing the Clash as Muddy Waters.” Janet and Steve instantly bonded over their love of many kinds of music – alternative and classic rock, alt-country and traditional blues and country – and started performing under the name Masked Marvel (named after Charley Patton’s alter ego). They first played songs by bands like the White Stripes and the Black Keys, but quickly started writing their own music that tried to bring the feel and spirit of old blues music into the 21st Century.
After a little more than a year, they fleshed out their band with Steve Kaufman, the former bassist of DC's Trip Lizard, and Dave Bjerke, who drummed for Northern Virginia's Jebus, and rechristened the band Gaslight Society. With this lineup, Gaslight Society's sound gelled and they began playing local venues such as the Velvet Lounge, Red and the Black and DC9. After one Velvet Lounge show, an NBC4 critic praised Gaslight Society's “punky, bluesy garage rock” and called Pinkham “a CBGB’s-style frontwoman, carrying on the tradition of vocalists like Debbie Harry – minus the sweetness – and Chrissie Hynde with added punk angst.” Gaslight Society is now playing with Jeff Miller, the former drummer of Washington DC's The Alphabetical Order.
Gaslight Society also was named an official USO band Memorial Day 2008 and performed at the Navy Memorial for the veterans of Rolling Thunder. Gaslight Society made its live radio debut in November 2007 on WMUC’s local music show Third Rail Radio.
