Singer/songwriter duo Gates & Goodell play their original acoustic songs, in a style they call "West Coast Folk Rock", at live performances in pubs, restaurants, festivals and coffeehouses around the Ventura and Santa Barbara areas of the California coast. Their music is influenced by many artists including America, the Eagles, Poco, James Taylor, Loggins and Messina, the Jayhawks and the Beatles.
Sounds Like
I bit like our influences... West Coast Folk Rock/ Country Rock of the 70's, like Loggins & Messina, Poco, America, Firefall, Simon & Garfunkel, Sometimes Jim Croce, James Taylor, The Eagles... but not like any of them really...
Singer/Songwriters John Gates and Bill Goodell, seasoned coffee-shoppers turned folk-rock duo, met in 2002 at a 4-day Jimmy Messina (Buffalo Springfield, Poco, Loggins & Messina) songwriter performance workshop. Sharing musical backgrounds and tastes, they began playing local festivals, showcases and open-mics in the music-rich Santa Barbara area and quickly gained notice and booking in the region. Their original acoustic songs are personal, and real, and range from haunting ballads to rollicking tongue-in-cheek novelties. Their shows are distinguished by the amount of richness in harmony and arrangement they accomplish with only two performers. John and Bill have shared the stage with some legendary musicians including Jim Messina, Kenny Edwards, Freebo, John Batdorf, Crosby Loggins, Kate Wallace and a veritable who's who of local Santa Barbara musicians. They have received seven "honorable mention" awards in the Billboard World Song Contest and the new CD, “Can Life Be So Simple?” is already garnering rave reviews.

and dammit all, we're in Chicago during your next Cold Spring gig ... this whole time thing is becoming a nuisance. I'm quitting music so I can come see you play.
Thanks for coming to the show! House concerts are so fun. Just need to map out a dance floor now. ALSO- do not underestimate the power of my black shiny boots.
Hi Bill, thank you for taking the time to come and listen. I really appreciate it. I hope all is well on your side of the globe. I'm trying to stay cool. Take care for now. ~ River.
