My name is Sabrina Io'Ana (yuh-ah-nuh) - namesake of the film starring Audrey Hepburn, a timeless beauty. I was born on April 19th in 1986 and have lived in Michigan my entire life. I graduated from Clinton High School (in the Village of Clinton, not Clinton Township) in 2004, then went on to study elementary education and social work at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids.
I currently work as an assistant at the University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor. I absolutely love my job, and really have been blessed with the opportunity to be a part of such an important facet of patient care. BUT! I'm pretty sure I definitely don't want to work in health care my entire life. I love dogs way too much, and would love to work for the ASPCA as an animal cruelty investigator, get into training, or start my own shelter/rescue.
I'm also into things like traveling, architecture, crafting, web design, antiques, and photography. I've had a few of my photos published in newspapers and magazines, shot my first wedding in June of 2007, and until August 23rd, I have three photos hanging in the hospital (near the Taubman Center 1st floor lobby, down by reception E!).
| Love Life | The man who has my heart is Bill, a 31-year-old self-employed business owner - also a native of Michigan. We've been together since mid-September 2004 and while not every moment has been utter bliss, I wouldn't trade our relationship for anything. Together we like to take naturey vacations, drive around taking photos, seeing new places, doing new things, watching movies, cooking, snuggling, taking the doggy for walks, and spending time on the lake in our boat.
The other two loves of my life are a green parakeet named Basel and a 2-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier named Oliver.
Yes, that's right - I own a Pit Bull. And if you're ignorant enough that that creates a problem, kindly hit ctrl+W. Or, take a few minutes to actually research this breed. Maybe you'll realize that, despite what the media would have you believe, Pit Bulls are no different than other large-breed dogs. They're no more prone to violence than your family Golden Retriever or Labrador. You might be surprised to know that Pit Bulls score better on temperament tests than most other dogs. According to tests conducted by the American Temperament Test Society, the American Pit Bull Terrier has a passing rate of 83.9% compared to only 77% of the general dog population.
Unfortunately, because of their appearance, ignorant, uneducated people are attracted to Pit Bulls thinking that the large, "tough-looking" dog will somehow bring them a sense of status. That they'll somehow look more intimidating, or tougher themselves. Those are the same people that think it is ok to fight dogs or teach their dogs to be aggressive. Aggression is not something they are born with - it is something they are taught. That is why Pit Bulls have such a terrible, false reputation... because they are popular among people who aren't smart enough to know right from wrong.
Pit Bulls are amazing, strong, intelligent, determined, loyal dogs that were once the most popular nanny dog. They're used by police forces, fire departments, search and rescue teams, as therapy dogs... the list goes on. Do you think our police officers, firefighters, and therapists would utilize and work alongside an unpredictable, dangerous dog? Do you think Helen Keller, Theodore Roosevelt, and celebrities such as Rachael Ray, Jon Stewart, Alicia Silverstone, Jamie Foxx, Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Brad Pitt, and Mel Brooks would own one or more Pit Bulls if they were the vicious, attack-for-no-reason domestic animal some people try to portray them as? I don't think so.
A quick Google search should point you in the right direction. Or volunteer for an hour or two at your local animal shelter - there is always a Pit Bull or ten or 15 there looking for nothing more than someone to devote their life to. Don't be a part of the problem, be a part of the solution and help keep this neglected, misrepresented breed from being victimized any longer.
Ultimately, it is one of my life goals to educate people about the truth, and to hopefully see breed specific legislation banned - not breeds of dog.
