Hi Gavin! It's nice of you to write about your Grandfather and all the selfless people that fight for our freedom daily. I just spent 3 days and nights camping on the beach at Camp Pendleton Marine Base with my father who is a Vietnam Veteran. I stayed up till the wee hours of the night listening to him and his war buddies tell stories about their time together in Vietnam. They spoke about my pops with such respect for his shooting expertise and bravery that it blew my mind. Their exact words were "Your dad was a bad-ass!" I've always known of his strength (mainly from childhood spankings) but listening to his peers speak about him at war was amazing. Saying goodbye to the base was bittersweet. I met soldiers that were hours away from being deployed, and my heart hurt for them. I met women who moved across the country to be with their men, and I saw those men vulnerable to love. I shared a lonely beach and a purple sunset with Military police in combat boots, and was thankful that I could dip my toes in the ocean. I took pictures of birds soaring above the water and I remembered what it felt like to fly. I experienced a way of life that is so different than my own, yet so close to home.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your music. You are a hero of song and your melodies are medicine for so many. Send my love to the troup and I'll see you all next time you're in town.
Loved your show in Joliet! I flew from Richmond, VA to see it and it was worth every penny! Take care of that lovely voice of yours--I'm counting the days to your show at The National!
