Where to start with this. I know I was influenced by a british rock band called Status Quo.
Others in no particular order: Crowded House, Van Halen, Marcel Dadi, Django Reinhardt, Robben Ford, Gary Moore, Beatles, Funk bands like Kool and the Gang, Imagination, More brit sounds like The Beautiful South, Blur, I am Kloot. Non guitar: Ben Folds, harry connick jr, deep purple, sting, amiee mann, some bluegrass too.
Just a list now: Django Reihnhartd, Chet Atkins, Toto, Eagles, Madness, Dexy's Midnight Runner, damn that Ynwie malmsteen, Paul gilbert, Mr Big, Steve Vai, Doyle Dykes, Nickel Creek, ......
Sounds Like
I've been told I have the vocal stylings of harry connick jr but the pop sensibilities of crowded house and squeeze. Guitar wise, there are bits of paul gilbert mixed with al di meola, a touch of SRV and django these days.
When Thomas Cray and I play together, we have been compared to Bell and Sebastian.
Even after more than 20 years of playing rock, blues, jazz, and country, Gavin Kirk is hungry for more! 2006 finds him performing original material in a duet, providing his unique take on popular tunes from the 80s through the present, and developing a repertoire of Jazz including standards, swing numbers, and even Gypsy Jazz, in the style of the legendary Django Reinhardt.
Who would have guessed that this 1995 "guitarist of the year" (from a UK competition involving 128 bands) would find himself over a decade later, in Seattle, immersed in such eclectic styles and influences. After a 7 year stint in Chicago playing with musical collaborator Thomas Cray, what's in store for Gavin in Seattle....
After studying with private instructors, and then at the Northern Institute of Guitar in Huddersfield, UK, Gavin began broadening his perspective with such diverse courses as Jazz Singing, Theory, Django Guitar Styles, Country Swing Guitar and Fingerstyle methods. Performing live over a hundred times on two continents in various capacities, Gavin has developed a confident and original composition style that showcases his soulful voice and skillful guitar playing.
Originally hailing from Matlock in Derbyshire, England. Alumni of both Highfields School, Matlock and the University of Nottingham.
Attended a few classes at the Old town school of folk music in Chicago too... check out the school if you live there!
Shout out to John Gill of the Fishpond Pub in Matlock, my first guitar tutor, also to Rob Kirk, my bro for showing me the first tunes and being an ever present jam partner. Props to Leavon Archer for igniting my true passion for guitar and to Thomas Cray for re-awakening my creative side more recently.
I recently visited, and performed for the troops in Iraq! If you click on the picture of me and the troops, below, you can download an EXCLUSIVE track for FREE from my album ‘Live From Iraq.’ Support the troops!
Gavin, Foiled Again couldn't be luckier. You add a whole wonderful layer to our music and its a joy as always to sing to your music. I really enjoyed The Dutchman. Performing with you and the gang really made my holiday. Thanks!
