Stinky no more What's it like growing up rock? Ask XBXRX, or Gaviotas's Simon Timony, who had his share of alterna-cool attention at a very young age: The 22-year-old San Franciscan led the Stinkypuffs which included his onetime stepfather Jad Fair of Half Japanese, his mother Sheenah Fair, Gumball's Don Fleming, and Lee Ranaldo's son Cody Linn Ranaldo. Fronting and writing for the most notable child-centered super-group of the early-90s alt-rock scene, Timony learned guitar from family friend Snakefinger, was home-schooled by his parents, who ran Ralph Records (his father Tom was in the Residents), and eventually befriended Nirvana when Half Japanese opened for them during the In Utero tour. I was actually trusted to go wake up Kurt before a show, Timony says wonderingly today..... After notably performing with Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, together for the first time after Cobains suicide, at the 1994 Yo Yo a Go Go fest in Olympia, Wash., Timony grew disillusioned with music at around age 13. But he picked up his moldy guitar again after discovering Korn and now hes making Gaviotas his full-time job. He performs at a suicide-prevention benefit May 31. His parents ran an independent record company in The City during the 80's and his earliest memories of being around late night studio sessions and learning guitar (left handed) from friend/mentor, musician ..Snakefinger... In the early 90's, the family became friends with the ..Nirvana.. crew (yes that ..Nirvana..). Simon, at age 10, befriended and mentored by ..Kurdt Cobain.., was a constant witness to countless shows from stage-side; becoming inspired again to pick up the guitar himself (right handed this time) and has played ever since. His former band ..The Stinky Puffs.. (which included ..Cody.., son of ..Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo..) was the only group to play with ..Dave Grohl.. and ..Krist Novoselic.. post <B>Kurdt.. . About the band...

GAVIOTAS is a San Francisco alt/punk/metal band with a driving purpose and a chip on their shoulder. Born in 2003, GAVIOTAS strives to challenge audiences to question the system with politically candid vocals, while unleashing melodic guitars and apocalyptic drumming for maximum listening pleasure. As lead singer and guitarist, Simon Timony puts it, "I think the sounds in my head will evolve us somehow. I can only go by instinct, but thankfully have fun doing it."

Evolution is not a lofty goal for this band's current lineup, considering their collective talents and musical pedigree. Timony grew up on tours with bands like The Residents and Nirvana, and even had the pleasure of Nirvana's Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl playing in his former band, The Stinky Puffs, after Kurt Cobain's passing. Bassist Rafael 'TRe' Corral provides the thunderous bass attack that is the Earth shaking foundation of the GAVIOTAS sound. Lead guitarist Christopher Gonzalez's magical ear finds sonic subtleties one can only describe as the perfect compliment to Timony's distinctive voice. Then there is drummer Brian M. Jack, whose interest in metal and a myriad of other styles fosters a robust musicality paired with a brutal intensity that punishes and pleases in equal measure.

GAVIOTAS has been performing in popular venues all over the San Francisco Bay Area, including Slim's, Cafe Du Nord, Neck of the Woods, Rock-it Room, Bottom of the Hill, Annie's Social Club, The Retox, F8 1192 Folsom, Thee Parkside, and The Stork Club. Their next album, ASSEMBLE, featuring an introduction performed by famed comedian and television-host Greg Proops, will be released in March 8, 2013.
