    gayle brandeis's Interests
General The world is infinitely interesting to me! My major passions revolve around reading, writing, dancing, food, activism, and anything pleasing to the senses.
MusicOld Brown Shoe, Bucksworth, Artichoke, Uncle Vic, Hobo Jazz, Talking Heads, Prince, Cake, Beck, Suzanne Vega, Lila Downs, all come to mind first, plus any music that gets me dancing or gets me feeling.
MoviesWings of Desire, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the original), Set Me Free (Emporte Moi), Rivers and Tides (the documentary about Andy Goldsworthy's creative process), Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Tampopo, Amelie, Stop Making Sense, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Scent of Green Papaya, Big Night, Bringing Up Baby, Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Yes Men, Supersize Me, The Girl in the Cafe...
BooksI don't know where to begin. So many books have moved me, shaken me, changed me. I am continually falling in love with new books. I would say the books that have had the greatest influence on my life have been the poetry collections American Primitive by Mary Oliver and The Dead and the Living by Sharon Olds (both taught me it was possible to write about the body with honesty and grace), Walden by Thoreau (which, in high school, taught me to question authority and connect with nature), Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver (which is such a gorgeous and heartbreaking exploration of sisters and community, and taught me that art and social responsibility can be wed in a seamless way), and Just Only John by Jack Kent (which, when I was a child, taught me the transformative power of language.)
HeroesEve Ensler, Isadora Duncan, Emma Goldman, Arundhati Roy, Medea Benjamin, Jodie Evans, David Byrne, Walt Whitman, Barbara Kingsolver, Toni Morrison, Maxine Hong Kingston, anyone who dares to speak truth to power, anyone who loves the world enough to want to make it a better place, anyone who takes creative risks, who gives voice to the voiceless, whose own voice rings out true and clear and free.

Hi you! I just wanted to say "Hi". We were thinkin about going to see Bucksworth at the Plaza on Sat night...if u are free, wanna join us?
Joseph

May 20 2008 2:44 PM

Come out and see us this Friday! Yep, this will be our first show in about four years, although for most of you it's probably been about seven years, since our hey day of 2001 when we did Europe and the Atlanta Jazz Festival with Saskia Laroo. Well I'm glad to say that domestication didn't quite work, and the Layden Brothers are back!
If you haven't been to the 5 O'Clock Cafe you don't know what you're missing. It's a tapas bar on a dock at the Fort McAllister Marina in Richmond Hill, and you couldn't ask for a better atmosphere, better seafood, or better..ahum!...music! What's more, it's always lady's night at the cafe, and the lady's always seem to outnumber the men! Certain Richmond Hill celebrities are always bound to drop by, and we hope to get one or two of them up on the stage.

we sing
our heart-dreams
loudly into moonlit skies,
wishing upon flickers of light,
skipping our smooth hope-pebbles
along the wide ways of promise.

ripple, they do,
these echoed promises,
in thousands of shimmering circles
resonating our life’s expectancy

as we cast silken spun web-nets
trying to capture the elusive
understanding;

- – what it means
to be loved.

Thanks so much for your help if you were one of the friends who voted for me. Boy A, my first novel, has now made the short list of 10 for World Book Day’s ‘Book To Talk About 2008.’ I owe a lot to my friends.

Unfortunately all the novels starts the final from scratch, so I really need your support all over again.

Please take a minute to vote. It might well be possible to win it now.

And you can still win stuff just by voting, as well as being kind and thus gaining an instant karma rebate.

http://www. worldbookday. com/spreadtheword is the site

(block off, Ctrl C to cut and then Ctrl V to paste into browser).

You can login with the same username and password as before to vote, or register again; or if it’s for the first time, it honestly only takes 1 minute: Just click ‘register’ then click ‘see the books’ and scroll down until you see my novel 'Boy A' and click ‘vote for this book’, they appear in random order.

Thank you sincerely for your time and solidarity.

Chocolate is the food of the Gods.

Montezuma drunk a frothy cup
of thick dark chocolate
each night before indulging
in his harem of women.

So blame it on chocolate.
The food of the Gods.
Sexy Valentine
Chocolate is the elixir of love.

Casanova savored creamy,
melt in your mouth chocolate
before he pleasured
each of his many mistresses.
So blame it on chocolate.
The elixir of love.

Chocolate is the food of love.

I popped a chocolate in my mouth
and rolled my tongue across the heady,
heavenly taste and buttery texture.
Then I invited this guy – with the heart briefs to come over

So blame it on chocolate.
The food of love
