Influences
that propaganda pamphlet that informs us that bass is the most unholy of instruments, poking gentle fun, kicking gentle fun out for an altogether more enjoyable time, hot nights, cold feet, epiphany, the ravages of Grandfather Time, new shoes, the search for soul, city streets running down to the riverside.
Sounds Like
The Devil's silver tongue (now that's heavy metal, if ever you've tried to take that weight on your shoulders, child), brass knuckle pacifism delivered with more gusto than sense, Garroting guitars, howlin' wolves on heat in the swamp just after thaw. Skeleton crews working night shift in a fable. Desire hitting a wall.
Too sweet for The Devil to lick and too damn hot for God to dance to, Gay Paris has been kicked out of all the most jumpin' dives that heaven and hell have to offer. Confined to the mortal coil, these four fine swamp cats roam the earth staying one step ahead of the Loup-Garou loo. With a pedigree in all kinds of devilry (delivered with an air of gallant dignity, of course), the boys well know how to shake your bones into a hole and keep 'em there. If you know what's good for you, you'll follow 'em to the river.
In the wake of the unannounced break-up of their former band after an ‘argument in a barn over owl noises and who got the jug next’ Gay Paris formed in 2008 and began gigging in early 2009.
Known for their neo-theatrical stage shows, replete with bad white guy soul dancing, audience kissing and outrageous lies and stories from front man W.H. Monks, the band are a dab hand at cramming old school rock n’ roll energy into their new take on the heaviest blues you’re likely to hear; bassist Fraidy Cat Podmore claims that he is simply giving the people want they want - vibrations that rumble you in just the right way. Outside of his bass skill and ‘crazy legs’ dance, Podmore is most loved for his ‘sex bum’ style, which has seen him become a fan favourite; many of Gay Paris’ audience will try to stroke the impressive beard during the performance.
Wailin’ H claims that when the guys aren’t on the stage, guitarist ol’ Blacktooth Marks is rumored to sequester himself in lightless rooms and study the Zen of guitar while engaged in yoga or possibly drink red wine and ignore what’s cool at the moment (young drummer Smokin D Wain on the other hand can’t help but be cool, after all, a popular chant at shows has become “hot dick on drums, hot dick on drums!”).
Having already made a heavy splash in the small pond of Australian music, the guys plan to continue haranguing the east coast with their sensual brand of post-blues boogie until such a time as the swamp calls them home.
An album is slated for release in mid to late 2009 under the tentative working title of The Skeleton’s Problematic Granddaughter.
Demo track Deadrie Fell’s Dog Park Blues is doing the usual rounds in the usual ways, despite its unusual nature and more demo tracks will surface in the near future. Stay tuned. Stay cool.
And remember, no matter what you may lose, you’ll always have Gay Paris.
