Thousands of albums sold, European tours spanning 14 countries, +1500 fanclub members, rave reviews in over 150 press articles, collaboration with a world class producer.... still unsigned but far from unknown.
Clocking in a 53 minutes, titled "Night", the 4th CD in Gazpacho's discography is our first true concept album where actually it's one song split into 5 parts.
"Night" is a musical description of a dream or a stream of conciousness. It explores the question of where dreams end and reality begins, and the mind as the tool that has to decide what to believe. The character goes through various memories real and imagined and sees the world from the angles of different people. He travels through time and visits places across the world including old New Orleans and ancient woods with pagan rituals being performed. Night is about life and interpretations of values and existence. Pretentious? Oh yes, but delicious as well... very delicious.
Before their 3rd album, "Firebird" (2005), Gazpacho's two previous albums "Bravo" (2003) and "When Earth Lets Go" (2004) were launched entirely on their own merit and awareness spread by "word of mouth" throughout the world. It didn't take long until they had debuted in the dutch indie charts at 6, and hit 1 three times(!!) on Mp3.com, won international songwriting competitons, got playlisted on national radio in Norway and, Played support throughout Europe for an international band, voted as the top 10 album(s) of the year for over 6 months on various sites, a general 'vibe' was spreading underground on Gazpacho.
After dwelling in "the caves", as they call their studio, since 2000, a smaller batch of records were sent out leading to critical appraisal in over 40 independent music magazines and e-zines, with headlines as:
"Pop Kings for the Future" - Panorama (Norway)
"Gazpacho have to be Norway's best unsigned musicians" - Monster Magazine (Norway)
"..seldom I have been blown away this much by a new band." - DPRP (Holland),
"Their debut album is a rare beauty" - Oor Magazine (Holland)
"If you can't appreciate this music, then you have no soul" - StereoHead (UK)
Gazpachos debut album Bravo (2003) sold several thousand, without any backing from record companies or management. This introduction to the big world was mostly thanks to the internet. In addition to giving free demos of their songs to their fanbase, they took care of them by interacting and providing their fans involvement in developing Gazpacho's awareness. They plugged themselves anywhere they could on the internet and expanded their network of fans to include over 50 nationalities.
Internet proved to be a useful tool, not only in communicating with fans across the globe and selling cds & downloads, but it saw a unique
collaboration across three continents on the song "Novgorod".
This track was written and produced between these places without even paying for a as much as an air fare. The American singer Esther Valentine and producer Peter Kearns from New Zealand teamed up with Gazpacho to write this atmospheric song entirely by sending files back and forth
over the web. Strangest of all is that they've actually never met face to face, and still haven't to this day.
Gazpacho's second album When Earth Lets Go (2004) provided a new twist of fate. Still an independent band, Gazpacho were contacted by producer Steve Lyon (Depeche Mode, The Cure, Paradise Lost, Reamonn, etc). This ended up as a collaboration on one of the tracks featured on WELG, 'Substitute for Murder'.
2004 also provided Gazpacho with a giant leap in awareness, as they toured 12 countries throughout Europe supporting Marillion. This resulted in 31 concerts performing for more than 35,000 people at respectable venues from 013 in Holland and Elysée Montmartre in Paris, to Razzmatazz in Barcelona. Overwhelmed by the audience's positive reaction to Gazpacho, Marillion's
record label, Intact Records sought to capitalise on Gazpacho's potential by launching their 3rd studio album, 'Firebird' as well as licensing their entire back catalogue. Appearing on Firebird is none other than Marillion's guitar legend Steve Rothery contributing with stunning melodic guitars on the track 'Do you know what you are saying?'.
"...The world is complete. Gazpacho, you, and your stereo." - 4/5 - Decoy Music(USA)
"..Buy it without hesitating!" - 4/5 - Music in Belgium (Belgium)
"...Big things should happen to these guys..." - 5/7 - Groove (Norway)
"...Yet another strong album, now it is time for the rest of the world to notice." - 8.5/10 - DPRP (Holland)
"...With theirstrongest album, the Norwegians place themselves far in forefront" - 13/15 - Babyblaue-seiten(Germany)
"...A remarkable musical equivalent of impressionism in painting - 8.5/10 - Rock Hard (France)
"...Let me tell you - IT..S VERY GOOD"- 4/5 - Melodic.net (English)
"...An optimal record that breaks and buries all musical definitions" 78/100 - Hard Sounds (Italy:)
In 4 years, Gazpacho have released 4 albums. An achievement any full time band would be proud of, however all Gazpacho
members all have full time jobs... showing not only talent but extreme dedication. The band also prove to have an appreciation for their fans, demonstrated in an event where fans got to send in sound effect recordings for inclusion in Firebird, and as a result were placed as complementing sounds actually ending up on the finished album. Gazpacho are in the forefront of trying to use what's available to them, from communication and promotion, to interactivity and loyalty. Perhaps that's why they've done well for themselves.
I'm very much looking forward to the 'Live at Loreley' DVD, hope to receive it under my Christmas tree . Awesome music guys, keep it up. All the best from The Netherlands, PRF.
