oh schnap! something from the crypt...this was shot in new york city at the old scenic club in east village one autumn sunday in 2005. i had no choreography plan, was funny cuz i was really all over the place but my friends as usual helped me out--tina schula shot it, solomon chase and lauren helped out with styling and props, also ulli barta gave some friendly dance instruction! the song in the video "good & evil" is just a demo version, its currently in production and will be on my record.
G.rizo (born Ihu Anyanwu) is an electronic music singer, DJ and producer.
Ihu Anyanwu started out as a DJ and zine publisher (Repellent Magazine) in 2001, in NYC at the height of Electroclash. During those days she established her love for electro – discovering all the various styles, from new wave to ghetto-tech. Her favorite labels at the time were Cheap Records, Gigolo and B-Pitch Control.
Eventually she first appeared on a record in 2003 with the release of “Je Me Mentis” an electro dub “oddity” on Codek Records. With a signature acid dub bassline and dark guttural vocals sung in broken French, the track received positive reviews leading to comparisons with the iconic black new wave diva –-Grace Jones.
G.rizo’s second release, “Eye Wanna C U,”--produced by Sasa Crnobrnja was released on DJ Hell’s Gigolo Records in 2006--was the first track to consolidate G.rizo’s love for electro and hiphop. According to Bruce Tantum of Time Out New York-- “…Eye Wanna C U” works the lascivious territory that… (Prince) did in his pre-symbol days....”
The B-side had a techno styled “Stalker” remix by Vienna’s Patrick Pulsinger giving it the 4/4 dance-floor rework that kept it on DJ play lists and dance floors across Europe.
G.rizo’s vocals have appeared on tracks by In Flagranti, Patrick Pulsinger, Trio Exklusiv, Electronicat, Snax, Donovan, Maximilian Skiba, Dubbelstandart, I-Wolf, and Daniel Givens. She has produced remixes for Mosh Mosh ("Im Keller") and a remix of Mother’s Ruin’s “Godzilla” commissioned by artist Andrea Thal.
G.rizo has performed at events for Hugo Boss (Fashion Week Beijing), Seven/Bernard Wilhelm (New York), Galerie Meyer Kainer (Vienna), Dante Fried Chicken (New York), Radio Soul Wax Tour 07 (Switzerland, Scotland), Die Registratur (Munich), Rio, Scala, Galerie Wentrup (Berlin), Salon Des Artistes (Dusseldorf), Le Showcase, Paris-Paris, Nouveau Casino (Paris), Icke Micke, Flex, Donaukanaltreiben Fest, Fluc Wanne (Vienna), Spring Fest (Graz), Dachkantine, Zukunft (Zurich).
In 2007 Ihu enrolled in the Music Production and Technology Master Certificate program at Berklee Music Online, which was completed in April 2009. Currently she is putting the finishing touches on her debut album, mixed by Donovan in Paris and scheduled for release on Gigolo Records in 2010. The still untitled debut album will showcase her songwriting and music production style, which fuses electro, hip-hop and funk.
G.rizo in 2009 has been featured on Gigolo Compilation 11 (“Boys Medley”) and appeared on releases by Donovan (“Breakin’”)/Work It Baby, Maximilian Skiba (“Magic Fire Romance)/Skylax Records and Mosh Mosh (“Im Keller” G.rizo remix)/Wired Records. In addition Ihu collaborates with Loic Leme on the Lightnings (myspace.com/ridethelightnings).
