I love a variety of music, movies, art, theatre - Broadway and off-Broadway as well as local theatre. I also enjoy shopping - I am totally in love with this year's wedge platform shoes and my collection is growing. I read extensively - mysteries, romance, contemporary and classic fiction as well as newspapers and magazines. I love to dance although I have issues with following a partner - I'm the oldest of 6 girls and I always lead - sigh (6/25/06 update - I learned to do a ballroom version of the cha cha in a class last week - I think there is hope for me!). I am a great cook - my repertoire is not fancy but I have a lot of interesting twists on classic and comfort foods. Fortunately I am finally learning to make smaller quantities of food so that I don't sabotage my weight loss goals. I also sew, but I don't do alterations so don't ask me to hem your pants or your jacket sleeves.
Music
I love all kinds of music from classic rock like David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and Little Feat to Folk such as Shawn Colvin, Allison Krause and The Indigo Girls to the great American Songbook and Frank Sinatra and onwards to Bluegrass and Country, Opera, Pop and many other genres and artists. I have songs to go with every emotion, every state of being and every historical period in my life. Recently Keith Urban's music has found a place in my heart and I can't get his music out of my head either.
Movies
My Top Ten list of movies (the links will take you to the Internet Movie DataBase listing for each movie):
Any of the Law and Orders, Mystery! ER, Boston Legal, My Name is Earl, HGTV, FOOD TV, lots of classic and/or syndicated television shows: I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Burns and Allen, NYPD Blue, and on and on
Books
I read prolifically. I love classics: Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, David Copperfield, Little Women. I also enjoy witty, thoughtful romance: Susanne Elizabeth Phillips, Nora Roberts (the Oxy Moron books are the best), Pamela Morsi, and others. I have read just about everything by: Maeve Binchy, Robert Tannenbaum, Jaqueline Winspear, Jan Karon, Elizabeth George, Janet Evanovich, Carl Hiaason, Ridley Pearson. For spiritual enlightenment and the search for inner peace: Danna Faulds, Deepak Chopra.
Heroes
My greatest hero is my paternal grandmother. She has strength and fortitude that have stood the test of time. No matter what trials she has faced in her life she has made the best of the situation and continued to move forward with grace, style and beauty. I hope that someday someone remembers me with the love and admiration that I have for her.
I have had a lot of other heroes in my life including two fabulous teachers - Mrs. Worthy Caulk my second grade teacher who moved me into the first reading group and appreciated my cuteness. She made me feel really special and I think that this positive perspective on my relationships with adults and peers has made me successful in a variety of situations that I have faced in my life. The second teacher was Elizabeth Dovel, my eigth grade English teacher. Her joy and enthusiasm for the literature that she taught was infectious and I became a joyful learner during our class time together. I also understand now that the ecstasy in learning is one of the keys to remaining young in mind and spirit even while our bodies are aging.
Merry Christmas from New York City Alex's Christmas 2006 Present to me - it's wonderful to watch again and again!!!

Janni's little rules and thoughts:
- Don't expect consistently logical and reasonable behavior from me or anyone else because this will only cause disappointment and disillusionment.
- A life that isn't full of surprises would be boring.
- Give out everything and more that you'd like to get back and get your joy from the giving.
- Don't let other people's bad behavior make you stupid.
- When you have a chance to dance on the bar - do it!
- When you are in a good mood dress for it. When you are in a bad mood dress for the good mood.
Who I'd like to meet: I have amazing friends who enrich my life with their love, humor, kindness, energy, talent, stories and forgiveness. If you want to join this group then you should love the arts, especially music and you need the time to spend with friends (on the phone, instant messenger or live and in person) to enjoy conversation and intense discussions on current events, emotional issues and day to day life. If you also love to dance that would seal the deal.
