   About Gema Hadridge
"the book of love has music in it. in fact that's where music comes from. some of it's just transcendental. some of it's just really dumb. but i love it when you sing to me. you can sing me anything." - Peter Gabriel

Biography

What you hear on this page is the combination of a love of all music and the practice of guitar, song writing and general music stuff of nearly 5 years. Having played in a band (Return of the Nobodies) in which Gema Hadridge wrote songs, played guitar and sang, one day it was time for her to move onto some solo work. For a few months a few songs were written here and there. And at starting sixth-form a new found world of emotions led to the first solo song ‘Abnormal’. This being written for any body who has fallen in love but been so scared because its a brand new feeling. Then a few months later, when alone one day, instead of doing the typical ‘watching the day-time TV crap’ she picked up her guitar and wrote songs different from any she’d written before. This time more heart felt, with lyrics that matched the massive choruses. Now, nearly 4 years on there is an EP, an album (and more tracks coming), each just as thoughtful as the next, they are waiting to get played to anyone wanting to hear.

Gema says: “I write music/songs as a way to express myself...whether that involves me writing a song about something going on in my life OR strumming a chord sequence i like for twenty minutes (its happened!). Everything I write is either written about or influenced by what I'm going through, or thoughts about past times. Each song I write has meaning to me and represents a certain time in my life. I find writing a song is also a way I process my thoughts; 'collecting' them and creating a song - each song being as brutally honest as the next.”

With the gigs growing and the fanbase increasing hopefully you’ll hear more and more of Gema Hadridge in the near future. Keep an ear out.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has helped and supported me, that is what keeps me going”

Coming up...(21.09.09)

"My idea of my music has changed within the past few months and I've decided I want to go back to a more simplistic way of writing, producing, recording and performing my music. Less focused on promotion and "getting somewhere" and more focused on enjoying myself and linking all my creative interests together. I'm currently working out my new found recording equipment and getting back into my art and photography. So, my plans for the next few months (in short) are to record some new songs, with a piece of art work attached to each one. With gigs, I'm hoping to get a few here there and everything and have more great opportunities like I have recently. Really, I just want to carry on enjoying music for as long as possible and all my sites (myspace, facebook etc) will be kept updated with everything I do."

Reviews

"A very talented songwriter/performer with a unique vocal to boot. Gema writes big and funky windswept anthems with lots of emotion and can write a chorus to die for" - Choon Music

"Its great to hear something fresh on the Cambs music scene. Gema has a lot of potential which should not be ignored." - Phil Pethybridge (Hope Street Music)

"Kate Nash might be a lazy comparison as although Gema does sound like her on first impression her minimal poetess musings have their own thing- a fragility to the voice, and a joyous eccentricity which borders on outsider music. It's all very affecting." - Bugbear Promotions

"Gema’s performances are quite simply great. Her songsmithery is effortless, her lyrics poignant."

“She has some interesting ideas and the backing instruments reminded us very much of early Placebo. She is obviously talented.” - Attic Records

"Gema Hadridge wowed the crowd with a few enchanting melodies. I thought it was really touching to see her father join her onstage for a few songs too, it was clear that they had a strong bond! She also took some time to explain the meanings of the songs she sang instead of leaving them to be subjective as most musicians would. Her songs had a strong sense of realism to them that I’m sure will take her far in the industry. I found that I could relate to most of the things she sang out easily being of a similar age to her. Her dynamic is one that is simple but beautiful. There was a relaxed mood to her whole set and was also joined by her sister onstage for a final song! She deserves to have an EP out soon because she has an amazing vocal talent and is just brilliant!" - Carleanne Gwen O’Donoghue (http://carleannegwen.wordpress.com/)

"It is very rare that you find a cd and love every single one of the songs, but this might be the case for Gema Hadridge's Dedications, Hysterics and Inhibitions. She has a brilliant voice with some lovely, powerful and touching lyrics. When's the next one gonna be here? ☆☆☆☆☆" Polkadot (from itunes)

"The perfect late night tunes... If you want to know what I mean follow these steps: wait til 2am, turn off the lights and get a bottle of wine. Now press play...see what I mean now? ☆☆☆☆☆" Badgeter (from itunes)

well there's a chance i'd be living with other people from bimm and my loverrr is moving in for a year too.  i'm never getting a mac, they look too darn confusing.  Yeah it seems pretty cool, i like the sea. Music is going okay, earned a good amount of money for a gig the other night, that made me happy. I've been mainly focusing on my promoting etc FATF is turning out to be awesome and this time for verve i get to spend lots of money on brilliant artists. Whoop whoop. how about you? xxx

I'm not sure where it is, but apparently it's very nice as it's rented out by a family friend and is in a good place, but all other details have gone over my head but fingers crossed.  Yeah that would make sence, but it costs more money and well...i'll just wait to get a really good one in a year. Yeah, you know i'm so speeecciiiaal that i get disabled benefits in uni, ha. i think that is hilarious.  It's for the professional diploma, thank goodness.  xxx

Oh god that went down like a pile of shit, haha i got it back and the whole back page was just notes of improvement, how upsetting.  comfort food does solve everything, that's why i'm starting to worry about my waistline. I was in Bad Boy B Town last saturday, as i auditioned for bimm and got in waheey.  and i am again not this weekend but next, but it's for a mate birthday present, taking her away, so we cannot part at any moment in time! How having to learn again after the summer? xxx

Oh it's a long story, but everything was wrong, refused contract, then booked me for a different day to what was planned (they put me on two hours after i travelled to the furtherest point of wales), then they failed to comunicate with eachother, i had to change the time with the stage manager myself. They rufused food tokens, they had no instrument storage and after promising to pay travel, they refused to pay it upfront or contact me after and left me over a hundred pounds down in money. When i asked from a contract prior to the event they removed me from their website and didn't contact me until i threatened legal persuit.  Fucking bastards.  Rant over.

wicked well i'll make sure i remember to ring you up on one of the dates and yeah definately come diary it up! xxx

It's in wales and it's full of horrible artist abusing people who deserve to be beaten (not wales, the festival, i'm sure the people of wales are lovely). That is all i'm saying and if you get the chance i'll hire you to do it for me.

Yeah course and...i think so. i'll double check later, my phone feels like it's miles away and quite frankly i'm not moving yet.

and no! you cannot come! hahaha of course and bring others, december should be a good one actually, i hope. it's really bloody annoy as cos we have no funds, as we're not right for grants, the museum is a charity etc. All the great people really interested are saying no just because of that. I'm going to have a meeting soon to try and get somewhere with this, whether they like it or not haha. xxx

Oh yeah of course...

and ah right, well don't apply to the square festival, they're bastards and i don't want you getting mucked about like i did.

Ah so in brighton now?
i'm there on the 17th and then on the 29th-31st.

i now can't remember what else you said. and yeah i have a folk at the folk on the 13th of december and the next verve after the october will be in january i think.

ah so prolonging your "not having to work" properly period? Oh what festival? how dare they not accept me! aha.  Verve is an event at the Fitzwilliam Museum, i put on the performances, this time it's performance poets, Dockers MC and Polarbear, really funny people and loads of other arty stuff is going on. It's a wicked event, just has a different, more artsy vibe. and yes folk at the folk is a must see along with verve.  I should hope it comes soon enough though.   Everyone comes to buntingford! it's where it's at! but yeah...maybe not quite. xxx

Well you know...i'm still slick.  Wow so you're doing lots and whaat? you're doing art foundation now?
Music is going wellish...doing a few gigs, Verve is coming up again, Folk at the Folk has just all been confirmed and i'm booking people up.  Life is all up and down as usual and college...well least said the better, but i'm ready to leave aha.

When you said Btown i thought you were refering to my home town of "buntingford" and got very concerned as to why you'd spend alot of time in such an unexciting place. ha. xxx

Hi Gema,

Thanks for playing last night - really enjoyed your set. Hope you did too? Next time i'll try and get a cajon (think that's how you spell - drum-box) player for you if that's cool.

Take care
