   Gender Smash's Blurbs
About me:

Gender Smash is an open mic night for trans/queer folks & allies:
to celebrate gender/sexual diversity
to raise awareness about trans & queer issues
and to tell stories about our experiences
through music, dance, spoken word, performance art, comedy, drag, improv, theater, show tunes, sing-alongs, jam sessions, interactive games, rants, circus acts, and silly human tricks.

Gender Smash is happening Friday, October 30th at Le Voyeur (404 E 4th Ave, downtown Olympia).
8-10pm ALL AGES, 10pm-midnight 21+ only
$5+ sliding scale cover (no one turned away for lack of funds)

Sign up during the event for 5 minute performance slots.
Be there at 7:30pm if you want to volunteer.

Gender Smash is hosted by a committee of volunteers who are dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of the gender variant and queer communities. We are devoted to creating safe space for gender exploration and self-expression through art and creativity.

Gender Smash is A Safe Space: Respect Everyone!

Please note that Gender Smash's current venue is Le Voyeur, which is a café and performance space with a bar operating on its premises 10pm to closing. To meet legal requirements, I.D. is required to admit people ages 21 and over from 10pm to midnight. No tobacco, drugs, or outside alcohol are permitted at any time, and no alcohol is permitted before 10pm. Please respect the venue and its policies.

Single-occupancy unisex restrooms are on site.

All proceeds from Gender Smash go towards operating costs such as rent and supplies. All donations are welcome! No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Food and drinks can be purchased at Le Voyeur, and treats will be on sale at Gender Smash!

An independent committee of volunteers has been hosting Gender Smash since October 2006. Before then, volunteers and members of the Gender Variant Healthcare Project, Stonewall Youth, and Olympia Men’s Project hosted Gender Smash for over a year from its inception through July 2006. The Gender Smash committee is open to anyone who is interested in making the event happen. Please join us!

Our email address is: gendersmash@gmail.com

Who I'd like to meet:

You! Please talk to a Gender Smash committee member if you want to help out....

You can attend an upcoming Gender Smash committee meeting (date/time TBA) to plan/organize the next event.

If you have access to a scanner/copier/printer, some masking tape or printing paper to spare, or a few dollars to put towards flyer creation, all of those would be very helpful. You can also help put flyers up once they're printed.

Once the next Gender Smash is scheduled, you can help with advertising by word of mouth, posting the event online, or distributing flyers.

If you know of an all-ages venue for shows in the downtown Olympia area which is welcoming to people of all genders and sexual identities, please let us know.

If you are interested in staffing our concessions table, working security, or being a door-person the night of Gender Smash, please talk to a member of the Gender Smash committee. These volunteer shifts are from 7:30 to 10:00 including setup (all ages can volunteer for this shift), or from 10:00 to just past midnight including cleanup (you must be 21 or over for this shift). The volunteer staff get to see most of the show while they work, and still have the opportunity to perform. These volunteers get free admission and *treats*!

Speaking of which, if you are a regular attendee of Gender Smash and want to bring home-made *treats* such as cookies or cupcakes to sell at our concessions table, that would be a great way to help out (and get compliments on your cooking skills and generosity).

And of course, you can work on a performance piece to share at Gender Smash!

About this page:
I have been very active in Domestic Violence causes all of my adult life. I noticed a need in the world pertaining to Same Sex Domestic Violence. It happens more than people know. Unfortunately there are a number of gay people who barely consider themselves worthy or valued as a gay person much less a Domestic Violence Victim. There are also very limited resources, statistics, or information, for Same Sex Domestic Violence. Hopefully through empowerment and education we can change some of this. :D

FTM Book Vol. 1 = OUT NOW!!!!!

About FTM Book Vol. 1
FTM Book Vol 1: A Basic Introduction to Transman Life is an easy-to-understand, yet comprehensive primer on FTM issues such as:

What is an FTM?
How do FTMs see themselves?
Appearance
Stages in Transition
Surgeries Available
Common Personal Histories
Violence
Discrimination
Health Issues
Counseling
Relationships
Common Legal Issues

We've worked hard to help create definitions that will help you talk about trans issues with others, including terms for body parts unique to the FTM and by naming the stages of transitioning. This book is great for anyone who who is having trouble understanding the lifestyle or choices of a transperson. When we first began dating, we were shocked that there was no one place that he (Aaron) could turn to show me (Crystal) "See, this explains what being an FTM means." We hope that this book will be a good start.

Best of all, when you order FTM Book Vol. 1: A Basic Introduction to Transman Life you can feel good knowing that sales of the book are being used to fund more research to help FTMs and their partners get through the challenges of their lives. This is a great book for youself and for anyone you know who could use a little more understanding. Also, you can help teach others about trans issues by donating copies to your local high schools, colleges, LGBT centers and libraries.

Get your copy here: http://www.cafepress.com/muskegon115

FTM Book Vol. 2 is also in the works (more focus on relationship issues etc), as well as a few other things to be announced...
