GENERALIZED OTHER
The generalized other is a concept used in the social sciences, especially in a field called symbolic interactionism. It is the general notion that a person has of the common expectations that others have about actions and thoughts within a particular society. Any time that an actor tries to imagine what is expected of them, they are taking on the perspective of the generalized other.
As a concept, it is roughly equivalent to the idea of the Freudian superego.
Generalized other – George Herbert Mead maintained that the experience of role-play and pretence in early childhood were vital for the formation of a mature sense of self, which may only be achieved by the child learning to take on the role of the other, i.e., seeing things from another person’s perspective. By doing this, the child may eventually be able to visualize the intentions and expectations of others and see him/herself from not just another’s point of view but from groups of others. The generalized other represents the common standpoints of those groups.
The attitude of the generalized other is the attitude of the larger community. According to Mead, the generalized other is the vehicle by which we are linked to society.
Sounds Like
A unique blend of hip hop and indie rock.
Bass driven beats with a dark side.
Heavy blues guitar and singable pop melodies.
Generalized Other is the evolutionary result of the recent state of music. They are young. They have power. Generalized Other speaks to the part of each of us that wants to reach out and say something to the world. Their music is wailing, in the same sense that upset babies wail. The bass driven beats of Generalized Other bring together an unparalleled blend of indie rock and hip-hop - upsetting the collective consciousness of their listeners.
If mannequins creep you out, then Generalized Other has the solution: listen to alt-rock that means something. Poets, musicians, artists, human beings who understand the state of the World create this sound. Consciousness derived from a Mile High (+) state of being can heighten the natural connection between music and mind. The elevated awareness that ensues is merely the results in a deeper connection to the planet Earth. This is what Generalized Other brings to their music.
One of the most energetic places of this planet has created this amazing collaboration of artists. Don't call them typical.
Created by Matty Schelling (drums) and Matt "Cliffy" Clifford (bass) in 2000. Generalized Other (GO) has grown from, but never forgotten, it's drum and bass roots. The freaky diversity and magnificent mountain backdrop of Boulder, CO has exposed GO to a wide array of music, artists and inspiration.
In 2003, with the addition of lead guitarist Kevin "K-Solo" Clifford, the group started playing hip-hop oriented shows. Several emcees played improvisational shows with GO in the past, but MC and front man Richie "Small Hands" Wallace, formerly of Subsurface, emerged as the first voice of GO.
In late 2005, singer-songwriter Matthew South joined GO. South's songwriting skills and indie rock background took the band in a new direction, adding more complex musicality - a dimension that had previously been missing. At the same time, Schelling switched to a digital drum kit and began creating unforgettable drum loops and rhythms. Together, “Schells,” “Cliffy,” “K-Solo,” “Small Hands,” and “South” create music that you can dance to and think about. Let the music retain utmost importance.
