GENEVIEVE MAYNARD AND THE TALLBOYS
The Hollow Way (2009 Revolution Studios RST500)
“It laid its weight across your heart and it makes you what you are.”
The leaves flicker past, the hot road curves into shadow under the trees, the blue air beckons, and the melody of this song will haunt your waking days. You keep driving the hollow way just to listen a little longer. This is an album to write a film for; music to fall in love to. And people beware: your partner might leave you for the siren-sound of Genevieve Maynard.
The Hollow Way by ‘Genevieve Maynard and the Tallboys’ reveals a songwriter working at the peak of her powers. This six-piece band, led, arranged and produced by Maynard, have created a sound that’s at once powerful, controlled, yet achingly intimate. Exploring life’s darker pathways through seductive melodies and dream-like textures, the twelve songs move from tales of survival in the soulful ‘Ripped’, to unexpected joy in the alt-country ‘Long Gone’.
The hazy road might be hollowed with use, but this is not music that can be used up. Always vocally inventive, quietly startling, Maynard’s imagistic lyrics weave stories of love and loss, departures and returns, a road trip through life’s joys and pains. Using assured, hypnotic, multi-layered arrangements the Tallboys hold Genevieve up so her voice can lay us low.
Radiating warmth and strength, The Hollow Way is that rare thing - a seemingly effortless, simply beautiful album.

From 'The Hollow Way'
Genevieve started her music career in the early 90s with indie band Bughouse before becoming a founding member of the successful electro-rock group stella one eleven.
For the past three years Genevieve has pursued the solo route, releasing two albums and two EPs to critical acclaim and national airplay. Her debut album Ghost Notes (2002) spent over 25 weeks in the independent AIR charts and was nominated by Rolling Stone as one of the top ten international debut albums in their end-of year issue.
A desire to continue her explorations of the alt. country genre lead to the formation of the Tallboys, featuring long-time collaborator Richard Anderson (ex Swirl, Genevieve Maynard band) on piano, Stephen Campbell (Bughouse) on guitar, Geoff Martin (Bow Campbells' Bloody Hell, The Impossibles) on bass, Bryce Jacobs (Josh Pyke) on lap steel and Brian Cachia (stella one eleven, the Margeritas) on drums.
Genevieve owns and manages Revolution Studios in Alexandria, Sydney, and has produced and engineered work for bluejuice (who came in at number 11 in jjj's Hottest 100 with 'Vitriol' and have just won the Red Bull AMP award), Melanie Horsnell, and National Top 20 and 100 charting releases for stella one eleven
Hi Genevieve, Thanks for the add, I've been meaning to say hello for quite some time...lots of folks think we are related hahaha We also have a few friends in common - Aaron Houston plays resonator slide on my E.P and Dave Aston once played drums in my band for a little while...We'd love to support your band some time... Stay Gold Gene M.
Gen I hope you have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to getting into the studio with you again in 2009 and thanks for the great sounds you get out of everybody. Cheers Virg...
Your voice gives me shivers. She points out that of Tanita Tikaram to me and so Joan Baez. If you were by chance finding a melody as strong as was " twist in my sobriety" you would be launched at once at the top of the charts.
