Hello! I am the herpes virus. Nearly everyone has me in their body in some form. 25% of you have me in the form of genital herpes, and about 80% of you have me in the form of oral herpes. 90% of you have no idea that I am there. I'm usually the strong, silent type!
If you have ever kissed, had oral sex or had any genital to genital contact there is a good chance you and I have already been introduced. You may not even remember having met me, but you probably did at some point. For most of you it when you were a small child. Even non-sexual kissing can spread the herpes virus. While many people may call me cold sores or fever blisters, I am still the same old herpes I have always been.
Most people have no idea that I am in their bodies. Only 10-20 o%f those infected have obvious symptoms.
Some people get blisters that become painful sores. The sores normally crust over and heal in 7 to 14 days. But, there are many other common symptoms, like:
Itching
Redness
Pain while urinating
Bumps
Tingling
Cuts resembling paper cuts or irritation in the genital area
Vaginal discharge
I can stay anywhere around the groin. This includes areas that may not be covered by a condom, like your thighs, hips, or buttocks (basically, anywhere covered by a pair of boxer shorts).
Often, my symptoms may be mistaken for other conditions, like:
Vaginitis
Yeast infections
“Jock itch”
Urinary tract infections
Rash
Hemorrhoids
While condoms do reduce the risk of spreading herpes, they do not prevent it. Once you learn about herpes you will know that it is really not a big deal. The stigma is far worse than the reality. The vast majority of those infected live totally normal lives and have active sex lives. Remember that 1/4 people have type 2 genital herpes. That means that many of those around you are already infected with it. Just because they don't talk about it, does not mean they are herpes free!
