Gentech formed as the young tall dark boys - Paul Maclaren and Robert Sutherland, 2 big personalities from the underground Glasgow alternative scene. The boys first properly met whilst sharing several pints of lager at Glasgow Universtiy student union (Jim's bar for those in the know).
Musically the interest lay in marrying cold European electronic underground sounds with hard driven guitars which went against the grain in terms of tradional UK popular music culture. This unyielding musical vision brought forward an unusual blend of non-traditional songwriting & electronics which surprisingly planted fire seeds that led to the band seeminly burning everything to ash in a short space of time.
Born in Glasgows west end at the heart of student & goth/Industrial culture many a night was spent under the influence of some of the most disgusting alcohol concoctions imagineable as the writing process began. It soon became apparant that there was an element of magic within the madness and interest starting growing across the country as the boys fostered a social gang mentality with a large entourage accompanying the band during work and play.
The band were then asked to debut live supporting one of the biggest names in the goth scene at the time at the Rat-Trap in Glasgow. Late night drinking occurred the night before as well as next morning but the performance and hype had been rewarded as the English promoter decided to book the band up for the huge Hybrid '97 festival in Nottingham (England) after only 1 show!
2 tracks were released through a naked truth magazine sampler, the tracks recorded in the now legendary customery crazy fashion, and further shows followed cementing Gentech as the best, outrageous and most loved goth/Industrial acts in Scotland. Residency at Edinburghs Cas Rock venue ensued as the band made headlining appearances at the Cathouse, Glasgow and the jam-packed Prince Armani night where the venue ran out of alcohol. Legend has it that the Gentech boys were solely responsible for this.
the ep DNA Corona was recorded at Red eye studios as well as heightened press reviews and (under the influence interviews). The music mirrored some of the chaos and experiences at the time with songs about sex, lust, apocolypse, detatchment and over indulgeance.
Tales of wild nights, dirty sex, underground shenannigans and sheer debauchery followed the band throughout this period until eventually the destructive forces that had driven the band so far eventually culminated in complete meltdown. Despite the sad departure of the boys the stories of Gentech days will be carried through generation after generation.
