GENTLE RAIN is a fresh new sound in the Portland area jazz scene. They’ve succeeded in reaching audiences with their blend of swing, latin, blues, fusion and modern jazz favorites.
Flor Fernandez - guitar- Flor’s guitar playing reflects strongly on guitar greats that influenced his playing style, including the likes of Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, George Benson, Jose Feliciano, Laurindo Almeida, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Ponder. Flor has evolved into a jazz guitarist, with a flair for the Latin rhythms. Cliff Jetton - trumpet -Cliff "Bear" Jetton has played in and around the Portland, Oregon area for over 20 years - big band jazz, combo jazz, pop, rock, blues, and soul. In addition to being one fourth of Gentle Rain, he is also one third of the Gil Reynolds Trio. His main musical influences are the great bay area funk bands, like Tower of Power and Cold Blood, soul jazz like the Crusaders and Tom Scott, and jazz trumpeters Greg Adams, Blue Mitchell, Chet Baker, and Clark Terry. Spencer Hinkle - drums -Spencer has played in several rock bands including the Outsiders and the Soul Trippers. He played drums for Chuck Berry when he toured in Florida and remembers the good old days opening for Jimi Hendrix and the Dave Clark Five. Although his heart and soul has always been chained to jazz there were few opportunities to play it until now. His favorite drummers are Kenny Washington, Bill Stewart, Joe Morello, and of course you can’t leave Buddy Rich off the list. He plays Taye Drums with K Zildjian and Sabian cymbals. David Griffith - woodwinds -David’s first instrument was the trumpet , which he played through high school. But after splitting his lip in his senior year he picked up a used flute and instantly became hooked. He has focused on both flute and alto flute (gorgeous sound), as well as their woodwind cousins, various saxophones, ever since. He currently plays and does some composing for a small Latin/Jazz oriented group, Voxanova. David also plays in Flipside, his church's contemporary service band. Sam Fisher - bass -Sam started playing bass in the symphonic tradition, earning a spot in the esteemed Portland Youth Philharmonic. His interests and playing expanded to include jazz and other contemporary styles. He's a member, along with David Griffith, of Voxanova in addition to playing with Gentle Rain.MYFLYPROFILE.NET
