Hello everyone. I'm Geoff Davis who fronted both pop/rock band The Freudian Slippers and acoustic based trio Davis, Edwards & Riley - bands which are now defunct. That wonderful violinist Graham Smith, once of String Driven Thing and then Van Der Graaf Generator, often guested with the latter outfit and he plays on 2 of the tracks here - 'Carrie's Song' & 'Psychotic's Lament'. We played numerous gigs in the Bristol area from about 1991 with a set which was considered extremely eclectic. Sometimes my songs were described in local press outlets as "lyrically incisive" which was pleasing because I always put a lot of effort into the lyrical side of my songwriting. Hope you enjoy what you hear on MySpace. If you do you can hear a lot more of my songs at SoundClick (see the widgets at the end of this profile) where the song Stay Around is available as a downloadable single. It is also available to download at my Indiestore along with all the other tracks here and five other songs. Click here to read a review of my album 'Ancient Wisdom Modern World' courtesy of Bryan Anthony at wickmanmusic.com. The album is available to buy at iTunes and at CDBaby.
I am also a published poet, (you can read my most recent unpublished poems here) having had three smallpress collections published by Outposts and more of my work published in various magazines and anthologies. In addition, I'm very keen on art (I painted the picture illustrating the song 'Leaving This City Too Soon') and have created some pages dedicated to the memory of my father who was a very talented artist
Bob Davis And His Art . Of special interest to some will be the paintings he did of scenes in Sierra Leone and Gambia - he was stationed in the two West African countries whilst on service with the RAF in the Second World War. Also, any Bristolians amongst you, or those of you familiar with North Bristol, might recognise Blaise Castle House from his painting of it. (The Blaise Castle Estate is just a short distance from the part of North Bristol where I grew up and where I returned to live in April 2003.) Here is a slide show of a sample of my father's work. (Click on the link above to see larger versions of these and more of his paintings.)
This is a cartoon that dad did of the band 'Davis, Edwards & Riley' (featuring guest Graham Smith). From left: me, Syd Riley, Graham Smith & Dave Edwards.
Hi Geoff, it's nice to be friends here and was also great to talk via the phone those couple of times too. haha, you're ok..I have a varied music taste, just that the heavier side of things appeals most I guess, but mellow is good too.
I bet you are very much looking forward to going, I know Maria is very excited about it, she spoke about you lots - she's such a beautiful human being! Talk soon & I shall of course check out your other page too.
Hello of Brussels. Thank you so much for the friendship and also for your beautiful songs and the attractive sensibility in your voice and in your play of guitar. Pleasant and long musical journey. Pierrot.
hey mate, thanks for the comment :) liking your tunes too!! small world ay?? we practice in his studio, i'll tell him we've spoken next time I see him ;) hope all is good! cheers, Jake (tF)
hey geoff, thank you for the blog comment, I'm really chuffed about the news! just listened to your song 'stay around' again, tis brill! hope all is well with you, jemma x
That's what the comments are for Geoff. I won't stop making them either. I will always call them as I feel them. I hope others will fololow suit and do the same. Constructive feedback from each other is part of supporting and I don't think that will hurt any of us. I do believe it's a better way to promote than simply spamming each others pages. Go look at Sean Lennon's page and read what he had to say about using his page to advertise. It's downright rude and disrespectful of the talent of the artist and those that do it should not be connsidered real true friends. Friends don't use each other. They support each other. Now, wouldn'tthis be a beter world to live in if we could all grasp this simple but elegant concept? Get rid of the dog eat dog mentality and think in terms of prosperity for all. Wow, what a wonderful world that would be. Like Louis Armstrong sang, "I see friends shaking hands, saying how do you do...they're really saying I love you." If our music is to mean anything at all to ourselves and others, then why can't t refelct the kind of spirit that lead to such a great song being written?
I've just posted a blog on the site entitled ARE YOU READY FOR THE IMPOSSIBLE that I am also noging to embed here, on MYSPACE. Time to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, and see how eciting things can get, if we do that!
Hi Geoff thanks for your very kind comments. We are trying to get a gig down your way so we'lll let you know how that pans out. Colin from the band is going to love the VDGG reference he is a big fan, me I am gald of the prefab sprout influence. You have some great songs Geoff - Pete
