   About Geoffrey Alexander
Geoffrey Alexander is one of the leading arranger/orchestrators working in Hollywood and the UK. He has now worked on well over 100 movies. His career in film music began at the age of 16, as an assistant to arranger Robert Stewart. He later studied composition with Brian Elias, Susan Bradshaw, Gerard McBurney and Giles Swayne. He also worked for several years as an assistant to the renowned musicologist and arranger Christopher Palmer.

As an arranger/orchestrator he has enjoyed notably long and successful partnerships with George Fenton (Planet Earth, Hitch, Bewitched, Mrs. Henderson Presents, Anna And The King, Ever After, In Love And War), Trevor Jones (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Notting Hill, Crossroads, 13 Days (BAFTA nominated), Merlin, Richard III (BAFTA nominated), Cliffhanger), and Richards Robbins (The Remains Of The Day (Academy Award nominated), Jefferson in Paris, Surviving Picasso, The Golden Bowl, Le Divorce).

His collaboration with George Fenton on Blue Planet for the BBC won BAFTA, Ivor Novello, and Emmy awards for best score.

He has also collaborated with composers Eric Serra (Arthur and the Invisibles, Bandidas, Jeanne d’Arc – The Messenger) Christopher Gunning (Cold Lazarus , Firelight), Stephen Warbeck (Mystery Men, Theory Of Flight), Anne Dudley (A Man Apart, Monkeybone), Charlie Mole (The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband), and with the late Michael Kamen (Band Of Brothers – BAFTA nominated, From The Earth To The Moon, What Dreams May Come).

Away from the screen he has recently completed a double concerto for Violin, ‘Cello and Orchestra. ‘Phantasia’ is based on themes from Phantom Of The Opera and was commissioned by the brothers Andrew and Julian Lloyd Webber. Recorded in 2005 with Sarah Chang (Violin), Julian Lloyd Webber (‘Cello) and conducted by Simon Lee, it is available on EMI Classics.

He has recently been appointed Artistic Advisor to the English Sinfonia for whom he is currently writing “Blood In The Snow” – a violin concerto for Janice Graham. Other current projects include a ballet with Richard Robbins – “The Country Bunny” (to be premiered in Charleston, South Carolina, Easter 2009) and film projects with Gabriel Yared and George Fenton.

Compose “the excellent song”!

a super-song, a mega-composition, something that astonishes people, that makes them sob, laugh and rejoice. No “sophisticated” art but no cheap entertainment either. Take the best of pop, jazz, tango, opera, operetta, klezmer, soul, blues, minimalist music, virtuosic violin-music (Paganini, Wienawsky, Sarasate) and so on, or compose your own style. Everything is fine as long as the audience is crazy about it.

Concerning the playing technique the composition is expected to be sophisticated, challenging and unconventional. It is expected to combine new effects with innovative sounds and hot rhythms.

Instrumentation: 2 violins

Duration: approximately 5 minutes of music

Awards:
1. Prize: 3000 Euros Heinrich-Vetter Preis
2. Prize: 2000 Euros Bourgier-Seisser-Cleve-Werhahn-Preis
3. Prize: 1000 Euros Pro Musica Viva Maria Strecker-Daelen Preis
4. Prize: 400€
Additionally, there will be two extra prizes of the PE-Förderkreis for students of music: each consists of 250 Euros!

Deadline: 01.07.2009

Course of events: With the professional counselling of Prof. Sidney Corbett we will determine a preselection (in total six compositions) among all the compositions sent in. That preselection is presented to the audience at the concert of awardees (on the 18th of September 2009 at the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum, Mannheim). The audience is going to vote for the awarding.

A Friend is a Treasure
A friend is someone we turn to,
when our spirits need a lift.
A friend is someone we treasure,
for our friendship is a gift.
A friend is someone who fills our lives,
with beauty, joy and grace.
And make the world we live in,
a better and happier place.
