WWW.SAMURAI.FM/MUGWUMP/PLAY... my latest monthly mix on the über great Samurai Fm radio, straight into ur player.
Geoffroy & Kolombo are part of the booming Belgian export dance scene and form the Mugwump project (a moniker Geoffroy initiated, initially working with fellow Belgians Spirit Catcher and now thus pursued with Olivier Grégoire aka Kolombo: www.myspace.com/kolomboloulou). Mugwump manage to simultaneously and succesfully release music on the biggest techno labels of our time (Kompakt, Cocoon, Gigolo, R&S) while keeping disco credentials up high as well with appearances on fledging cosmic/disco imprints such as Eskimo, Permanent Vacation, Endless Flight/Mule Musiq, Misericord or (soon) RVNG. All this with releases on reference house labels such as Rob Mello's Disco 45 imprint or Sasse's Mood Music. The Mugwump sound is genetically Belgian and pleads for a total fusion, with the emphasis on the groove and psychedelism and no restrain into the BPM choice... More specifically these days, Mugwump fuses disco aesthetics with modern techno leanings, with a touch of Belgian New-Beat sometimes and have come up with a sound and a tag that's starts to be currently called the Disco-techno sound.. Something rather fresh in these post-minimal times where "new" house identikit tracks are being unleashed as 'forward-thinking' house music that mostly reproduce classic house without the depth or the sound of the originals.
The wide variety of dj's supporting and charting some Mugwump music, so far, is a testimony to this and include Sven Vath, Ivan Smagghe, Pete Herbert, Ewan Pearson, Sasha, Rob Mello, The Glimmers, Mike Monday, Jef K, Sasse, Naughty/Filippo Moscatello, Chris Duckenfield, Steve Kotey, Damian Lazarus, MANDY, Kiki, Serge (Clone) or more recently Andy Weatherall, Peter Kruder, Michaël Mayer, Dubfire, Mr Scruff, Aeroplane, DJ Hell, Adam Marshall, Freeform Five, Dominik Eulberg, Gregor Tresher, Chymera, Nick Chacona, Robert Owens & Mark E, to name but a really few...
As a DJ, GEOFFROY has a long experience of working different crowds, with a CV that includes a 8 year long residency at Belgium's mythic Food club in the end 90's till mid-Noughties and with slots over the years at clubs such as Fuse, Fabric, Robert Johnson, Rex, Batofar, Culture Club, Dirty Dancing, Panorama Bar, Weekend, The End, Basics, Pacha, Privilège, Propaganda and many, many more... He currently plays a broad range of electronic dance music (depending on the parties he's booked to dj) that includes electronic house, new techno, tech-dubstep and cosmic or electro disco, with a hint of forgotten classics while KOLOMBO & GEOFFROY perform their semi-live sessions together, as MUGWUMP DEX n FX, tweaking new versions of all Mugwump tracks with added keyboards, fx and samples, live in the mix...

QUOTES
R&S / MUGWUMP "Everything Remains"/"Parser", out 19.10.09
An informal tribute to Ghent’s Boccacio club, which was central to the early development of R&S and a huge influence on Mugwump’s Geoffroy. "Everything remains" commemorates and updates the sound of a night out at Boccacio in its heyday - with its disparate mix EBM, New York house, Belgian new-beat – stripped down and streamlined into something totally modern and totally Mugwump while ‘Parser’ is a similarly vigorous, no-nonsense dancefloor track, a further refinement of the Mugwump “disco-techno” sound expertly arranged and mixed for maximum impact on a heavy-hitting soundsystems. It fits into the R&S tradition nicely: dance music that’s as stirring and emotive as it is cutting edge. Massive DJ support already...the biggest for Mugwump yet.
Pitchfork: "The Belgian duo Mugwump have some serious range. Their single for Ewan Pearson and Sasse's Misericord label sounds like some kind of hot-house disco grown from Italian seed and nurtured with glacial drippings. ("Slow" doesn't begin to describe it.) For Kompakt, they mashed together breakbeats, disco vamps, acid squelch and a touch of good ol' EBM, coming up with a two-track EP that burst at the seams. Now, for the recently revived R&S label, they've come up with two more tracks that build upon familiar foundations but are far too forceful to be mere pastiche. Both cuts pay homage to the Belgian label's legacy as a mainstay of main-room rave choons: "Everything Remains" is built upon a mean, muscular, one-note bass syncopation and a snare/handclap combination that snaps like a steel trap; it builds intensity with tense electric guitar riffs and a sweeping chord progression that risks going over the top, but never quite does. "Parser", balancing hissing drum machines and fat snare samples, is loosely woven, slow-motion techno with a hint of Biosphere's "Novelty Waves" (an R&S classic, as a matter of fact) in its roiling bass line. There's a vintage feel in both sound and rhythm, but something about it's so goddamned urgent and huge that it just sounds, well, timeless. "
Piccadilly records: "Heavy, forward thinking electronic house music from Mugwump. "Everything Remains" is epic in both arrangement and demeanor. Reverb-laded breakdowns, massive bass riffs and a chugging, killer beat to bounce to. The production is tight, restrained but powerful and highly innovative - just listen to some of those little vocal tricks in the breakdowns. Various different instrumentation keeps things evolving as catchy guitar licks and sweeping pads ands to the atmospheric drops and crescendos. "Parser" is a low-slung grittly number that'll get you grinding and pulling weird shapes. A sound popularized by DJ's like Andrew Weatherall and the Glimmers - bugged-out discoid dancing for basements as Luke Unabomber would probably say. You need!"
Shazam (blog): "'Everything remains' looks set to continue the group’s trend of clambering across genre boundaries with ease and mixes up a heady blend of electronics and live guitar to create a sound similar to Tiefschwarz at their creative peak, circa 2004. ‘Parser’ is a dubbed out psychedelic discoid number that’s likely to find favour with those who like the more weirder side of club music – something tracks on R&S have always had a habit of pulling off admirably. "

Laurent Garnier - "Fat and old school, will play those!"

Brodinski - "WOAH. The Grooviest stuff i heard this year. it's LOUD. I love it. Big support for Everything Remains the Same."

Two solid disco-techno tracks with weird vocals for DJ Hell's label...support from Hell, Dominik Eulberg, Freeform Five, Gregor Tresher, Laurent Garnier, Angel Molina, Robert Owens, Nick Chacona, Motorcitysoul, Mike Pickering, Makossa & Megablast, Bones, Tim Paris, Pete Herbert & Matt Walsh...
Piccadilly records: "Having hit us with two of our biggest sellers of recent times ("Boutade" and "Yanja") Mugwump's Geoffroy and Kolombo now drop more of their house music sounds, this time for Gigolo. "Die Nacht Ist Kuhl" is relentless in arrangement, with disco loops, Latin rhythms, heavy techno synth stabs and a German spoken word sample that name checks Bergheim! "Steamulus" is a slightly more reserved affair making way for some nice mood music with a modulating disco loop that infectiously builds for most of the record, and then lets go with heavy throbbing bass lines that deliver the big pay-off. Underground house music to fill the floor - always a good thing!"
Phonica record: "MUGWUMP have definitely been a busy outfit at the moment with releases coming out left, right and center... Thankfully the quality hasn't dropped a bit! "Die Nacht Is Kuhl" - on International Deejay Gigolos nonetheless, is a killer, stomper of a record with two rolling tracks - complete with cowbells, funked up guitars and bumping grooves..."
Boomkat records: "Balearic infected tribal house from Mugwump on Gigolo. 'Die Nacht Ist Kuhl' is a sensuous slab of sinister German house with proper rolling percussion and barely repressed disco vibes, while 'Steamulus' is the percussive rattling builder on the flipside made for all-night groovy pump-a-thons with a darker edge."
Dominik Eulberg "Great release!
Freeform Five: " It's another mugwump killer!"
Jonty Skruff : "the track is a direct homage to old school Ibiza house, indistinguishable from the likes of X Press 2 at their creative peak of the early 90s.Cowbells, tom toms, bouncing basslines and plinkety pink guitar riffs combine superbly in a track that will delight old school acid fans as much as younger clubbers enjoying proper house music for the first time. Deep (but in a good way)."
Gregor Tresher: "yes, i like die nacht ist kühl, big sounding stuff!""
Nick Chacona: "Yo G did it again.. This is a fucking party jam if I've ever heard one. Can't wait to drop this at the Grass Roots Fesitval for 15000 Screaming Hippies Dance fiends this weekend."

The original version of "Tellakian Circles" on the a side is a uplifting percussive disco house number, that has those trademark Mugwump grooves. Kompakt 189 / MUGWUMP "Fears Inc." Out 27 April 2009
These two guys from Brussels are on fire! Geoffroy and Kolombo grace
us with their second 12” after the much loved “Meditation EP”. This
time around, they take us to the dark side of house music. The title
track “Fears Inc” sounds like the alternative soundtrack of Polanski’s
“Dance of the Vampyres”. There’s an overall gay atmosphere but evil
bloodsuckers are lurking behind every corner. “Fears Inc” reminds us
of the mid 90s when labels like Strictly Rhythm helped house music to
develop a variety and elegance that was unheard thus far. Mugwump roll
out a majestic, sanguine deephouse track that builds up to total
frenzy including bloodcurdling screams and all. This is a monster
track... for real! “Nothing without you” quotes a different period of dance music, diving deeply into the year 1988 when Djs at the legendary Boccaccio Club near Ghent fusioned EBM and Acidhouse into NEW BEAT, a highly
energetic ancestor of nowadays European techno. Kolombo and Geoffroy
give this timely deceased genre an update and who knows... maybe they
kissed the beast awake!

Phonica records : "Geoffroy & Kolombo Presents : Mugwump on this 12". Lets go straight in as this is great 'Fears Inc' is string laiden groover that will not stop peaking and dropping. The production is superb and the mix is almost epic. Subtle yet huge oh yes. 'Nothing without You' awesome space tinged Disco Techno the way it should always be done. After the break the effects take over and you are lifted into the beyond once more. A great not so 4/4 vibe about this side."
Peter Kruder (G-Stone-Gigolo-Macro) : "Both tracks are really good..."

Kompakt 182 / MUGWUMP "Meditation EP"
"MUGWUMPS FIRST RELEASE ON KOMPAKT. AND WE THINK THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE A NEW GENRE OF HOUSE MUSIC THAT CAN BE CALLED "CLASSIC HOUSE WITH A NEW SUB-TEXT". A MUST-HAVE...
As far as we know, Geoffroy & Kolombo from Brussels rather refer to William Burrough's drug-induced reptile weirdos from Naked Lunch. Anyways, Mugwump's music is definitely a mindtrip on its own, yet - it's
also accessible and very entertaining in a sober state. Their sound is fat, warm & sexy. There's a lot of classic house in it but instead of repeating history they really add some new magic tricks. In fact, each of the three tracks on the 'Meditation EP' would be worth to start a new subgenre. But instead of coming up with three fancy new tags we prefer to get ourselves a drink and hit the dancefloor. And so should you... Oh, by the way... you should also check
out Mugwump's more than amazing release on Rob Mello's Disco 45 label. It's totally awesome." Michaël Mayer
Phonica records: "Mugwump's 'boutade ep' was one of our biggest sellers and in fact it was one of our top records of the whole year. Here we see Geoffroy return with another top release, this time on the mighty Kompakt. "

Misericord 002 / MUGWUMP - BOUTADE
"A 107 bpm balearic / trancey disco, with a heavy heavy bassline reminiscent of trevor jackson's remix of chromeo from a couple of years back. don't let the speed fool you. this is not a chill-out record. it's a monster... On the flip, myself, Sasse and Naughty turn in a chugging Prescription-esque dub for good measure. If you have the guts / sense to change the pace a bit you will be mightily rewarded. Slowly, surely! " Ewan Pearson (Misericord)
Heavy DJ support from Andy Weatherall, Optimo, Gilb'r, Tiefschwarz, Pete Herbert, Nathan-Gregory Wilkins, Morpheus, Will Saul, Ben Watt, Dixon, Âme, Jef K, Ivan Smagghe, Prince Language, Toby Tobias, Chris Duckenfield and reviews/mentions all over the usual blogs.
Mr Scruff : "An immaculately produced and original piece of music that we should be hearing a lot more... That Mugwump record is amazing, people keep asking me what it is all the time."
Nathan-Gregory Wilkins: "One of my favourites since Ewan sent it to me.Truly wonderful. Will dutifully go and buy on vinyl over the next few days. Well done."
Piccadilly records, Manchester: " OK, prick up your ears, I will tell you this but once. We have a bomb, and not only that it seems we have a proper good label that (if we whisper it) we may be able to rely on. The last record that came as the debut for Misericord was Al Usher's "Gnanfou" a total bomb and big seller here at PHQ. Now the second release on the label is this EP by Mugwump. "Boutade" comes in two versions the Original on side-A is a brilliant piece of midtempo house / disco with an absolutely killer string bit, super solid beats slugging away beneath a killer bassline and proggy synth sounds, all before the piano breakdown! Over on side-B the "Miseridub" which supercharges the elements from the original and turns in a slightly more DJ friendly version, however both sides are total killer, this will be big!!! "
Keith Optimo " "Awesome" is one of the most over / mis used words of our age, but this really is awesome."
Dixon "love this track"
Gilb'r (Chateau Flight) "really really good!"
Pete Herbert "love them both. 'Tis a monster indeed..."
Prince Language "they are both really gorgeous. Especially loving the dub. Played them out and they sound amazing."
I-DJ / House (Jez Torrance) : "All too irregular they maybe be, but I love Mugwump releases and their delightfully non cynical dance music... give its somptuous orchestral strings and lowdown analogue bassline the right airing and realise 107 bpm ain't too slow..."
I-DJ / Eclectic (Matt Anniss) : "We're slightly slow on this but its so ace we tought we'd make you aware of it anyway. Mugwump look to the Balearics for inspiration. the result is a shimmering slice of 107 BPM e-disco - all bubbly synths, evocative strings and lush piano breakdowns. Wonderful. flip for Ewan Pearson, Sasse & Naughty's Misericord dub, which add cowbells and some well-placed bleeps and blips for maximum dancefloor pleasure. an essential purchase basically"
Philip Sherburne (Resident Advisor/Lan) :” Where earlier Mugwump releases for the likes of Moodmusic have reflected a lush, melodic electro-house sensibility, ’Boutade’ is in keeping with Misericord's slow-disco aesthetic, clocking in at a churning 107BPM. With over two minutes of intro, Mugwump take their time digging in, but it's hardly wasted: fluttering violins, channeling the nervous energy of Philip Glass, cushion dramatic string vamps and methodical tympanis that stretch the tension to breaking point. The same simplicity rules the rest of the tune, which is built on a fat, jaunty bassline and a plucked lead ruffling its peacock feathers. Instead of development, Mugwump follow contours in the sound, focusing their energies on judicious filtering and the sneaky rearrangement of the song's principal themes. The B-side is a similarly-paced edit by Pearson, Sasse and Naughty that zeroes in on ’Boutade’s moments of peak intensity and draws them out in a glorious smear of filters and filigree with cowbell-heavy Latin percussion and lazy handclaps chunking up the rhythm nicely. It's the perfect, starry-eyed complement to Mugwump's languid ecstasy.”
Rune Lindbaek: "Just heard Boutade.. OMG, one of the tunes of the year for me!!
Keep up the good work!"
Bill Brewster (Dj History) "record of the year"
Prins Thomas: "'boutade' is EASILY one of the best records of 2008."

3. Mugwump – Boutade (Misericord)
DISCO 45 records / MUGWUMP - YAJNA
"Yajna" is sounding like nothing else. Electronic, melancholic and with a massive horns breakdown, it's on Rob Mello's Disco 45 imprint, released trough Kompakt on two versions. To complement the anthemic original, Mugwump have done a bonus remix in hommage to the No Ears Dubs
"Yajna" has received super support from Michaël Mayer who's hammered the original and signed Mugwump on Kompakt straight after. Sven Vath also plays the original a lot.Check quotes/playlists here below:

Piccadilly records : "Having come up with one of 2008's biggest releases (the "Boutade EP"), Mugwump is back with another absolute monster of a tune. "Yanja" is just one of those quality house tunes that you know will be in your box for months to come, such is its combination of depth and instant appeal. It's a simple, uncluttered track with a nice fat kick-driven rhythm, snappy percussion and a killer melody. But would you be expecting a brilliant batucada-meets-orchestra breakdown in the middle? I reckon not! Huge! If that's all a bit too much for you (fools!), then the flipside features a more four-to-the-floor straight-ahead dub..."
I-DJ mag : "It¹s nice to see former Hi-phen boss Geoffroy back in action, following the brilliant ŒBoutade¹ earlier in the year. Whereas that was a spine-tingling slice of deep Balearica, 'Yajna' goes for the jugular from the off. 12
minutes long in its original form, 'Yajna' bobs and weaves around flittering
riffs and throbbing beats before dropping into the most unlikely breakdown
an Eastern European marching band in full flight. Silly? Yes, but don¹t
think of it as a novelty record it¹s actually rather good. Besides,
there's a trippier, reverb-heavy dub for the killjoys on the flip. "
Aeroplane (Eskimo): "The original is a nice epic track!!" (featured on Aeroplanes's Resident Advisor 2008 podcast)

Phonica records: "Mugwump hit back with this electronic monster. Watch out for the horn breakdown that makes the record. Out of nowhere it comes in then out. Followed by more electronic twitches and tight beats. A dub on the flip has less of everything for the more sensible you."
DJ History's Top 5 records: "Not as good as Boutade (but then what is?), but still better than most. DJ Geoffroy in full effect! "
