First played bass guitar and formed "Blow" when I was 15; a twelve-piece "soul orchestra" bringing classics to a generation of pop and indie kids. Dabbled with hip hop, engineering for the "Infamous Compton Posse" on their first album (main man Noel latterly discovered guitars too with Dixie).
Was force-fed a diet of Britpop and Indie when I moved to South Wales in '93, and helped form "The Beckett", which is where I learned to love being in a rock'n'roll band, riding the wave of Britpop through the Swansea student population, regularly packing out the City's best venues. Regrouping with a new drummer in a new millennium, we attacked the London circuit and then brought South West England to its knees, recording three EP's along the way and made a dent in the early days of internet music with a Top 20 Smash(!) on mp3.com. To see what The Beckett became after Emlyn and I left, check out Stylus. for groove-driven indie at its finest.
After the demise of The Beckett in 2002, I pimped my bass around several groups, doing some development work with TheRandom, Ghost No5, Andrea Miller, x2, Stylus and a few others, as well as gigging regularly with EviVine, Money $hots, Victoria Hume/Moth and as part of Rich Webb's European backing band.
As for now, I'm always open to new bass opportunities, be they permanent or subbing, live, studio or development. Bring it on.
Influences
Where to begin?!...
Pop of all kinds... music should touch people who don't understand how it's made - I hope I never get far enough up my own arse that I forget that!
"The bass playing of George Georgiou is.. well Georgious. His sense of time and where to place his important notes float intentionally behind the beat and directly on top when needed. Such control is a blessing to a band and rhythm section."
Don Kimenker of EarBuzz.com reviewing Mothband Electricity EP - My most flattering review!
Me …
I like to have things to do while the sun's out but am currently sans day-job, doing bits of all sorts to keep the wolves from the door. When it's dark I like to play bass with great music people and I spend a lot of time watching gigs, pimping bands I like, networking and looking for new musical projects. Oh, and although it does vary dramatically from month to month, I spend way too much time online.
Music huh? …
A music lover first, bassist second, and some way behind that a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, lyricist and sometime keyboardist. Also an out of practice lover (not a fighter). One day I might add writer to that list...
Rich Webb: Rich and I met through his brother Dave in (I think) 2005 when he was in London and had an urge to gig. We spent an afternoon learning sketches of his songs and took to the stage and since then have been wielding my bass and singing some backup for his European tours - for the autumn 2007, spring 2008 and autumn 2008 dates, as well as arranging and recording with him during May 2008 at Horus Studios in Hannover, Germany. The fruits of that labour should be out as an album (provisionally titled “Beautiful World” for Autumn 2009, but I may be posting some advance snippets here so watch this space. The next single should be out in May/June and we should be back on Das Road in support of the new album in September/October. 2007 album "Overboard" available from iTunes as well as real record stores.
Absolutely adore working with this gem of a gent; in a studio we're inspired but on the road we're formidable - in glorious full band formation or flying lean as the trio.
Danny Valentine & The Meditations: I met Danny around 2002ish when we were both playing with the darkly hypnotic Evi Vine. Having been an enraptured member of his audience since he formed this band I was genuinely honoured to be asked to become a Meditation, take over bass duties and allow my old Mothband and $hots compadré Rosco back onto 6-string where he was born to be. Their first single - a double A side of Architect of My Love / Killing Floor - had a worldwide release in 2008 and is available on itunes (physical print has now sold out). The next outing "The Lion, the Fish and the Bear" EP is scheduled for an April 2009 release and will include [don't think/don't feel], Queen of E, Mass Kub and Yr Jb.
Currently playing live with these guys and the beautifully melodic (or is it 'melodically beautiful'?) Super Superbs, working on the debut album over this summer and generally having a blast!
Tell me about MySpace …
I came to here for the music, but developed an addiction to reading and commenting on MySpace blogs, which eventually rekindled my desire to write. I guess I've become a sometime writer of short blog-type things, ramblings and occasional hack-poetry. There's at least one novel in me, but sadly there’s never been the motivation to start it.
I've also made some amazing connections on MySpace and some beautiful friendships. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to meet many MyFolks in Britain and across Normerrica on several roadtrips. By and large everyone I've met so far has restrained their psychopathic tendencies and I made it out alive with great memories and a photo for pretty much each of the 8,000 miles traveled.
For my music and writer recommendations, see below or trawl my friends list. Be polite - many of them will eat you alive. Actually don't be polite - most of them will probably prefer that!
Oh, and I'm always open to new bass thumping opportunities - drop me a line!
please try to remember that this is MY space…
I am here to find good music, writers and people, to write a bit, promote my music and to blog-dick. Not to hook up. (Although… you know...)
In general, I don't immediately accept friend/blog subscription requests. I like to check requesters out when I get the chance. Your private profile isn't helping. Nor is the cut'n'paste 'hello' message (no message at all almost guarantees being ignored). You should realise that guilt is your best weapon!
No Hello Message = Rejected Request Spamming my Comments (or trawling my Friends List and spamming them) gets you reported.
(depending on my mood - if you're smart and funny, you'll probably be forgiven)
Hi, above is my remix of the Enter Shikari song "No Sleep Tonight" (hit the play button...). This is for a remix competition, closing on 28th September. Please have a listen, and then vote for me!
Hi George, you can indeed buy Rosie Taylor Project on record and cd in fact. You can get it all from the record label shop Bad Sneakers Shop, Thanks for wanting it in the first place that's excellent news! Sammx
Since you guys are my friends I though you might want to check out the hot new Vagrants vids from the recent Hi Fi Bar gig http://www.youtube.com/thevagrants
The theory stuff all starts to make sense when you can see how it is used in real playing situations, and it looks like the course does just that, nice one.
