Who were your inspirations, teachers and enablers? --
Many inspirations. Friends who played, and then of course Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Cropper (of Booker T. & the MG's) , Kenny Burrell and many more, but those were the main ones. Too many teachers to recall, both private and in school. I started out playing clarinet, then sax, and then on to guitar. The great enablers in my life were my parents, then Herbie Herbert and Journey.
What inspires and influences you today? --
My inspiration comes from my friends and family ; of course Ross and StevieKeys . Other influences musically today are people like Gershwin, Aaron Copeland, Gil Evans, Randy Newmann, Mack Rebeneck ((sp?) aka Dr. John), and of course my birds Quasar, Koko, Venus, Kiwi, and Paraquito.
I've always had a love for music. Some of my earliest memories are of listening... my parents always had music around in a wide range of styles. So I got a good education early on. At one point, I wanted to go beyond listener and become a participant on a very primal level. My parents always made instruments and lessons available to me. And then came the birth of Rock and Roll...
Who did you play with before Journey? --
Many early bands, then Frumious Bandersnatch, James Trumbo, and the Jerry Garcia Band.
Are you married and do you have any children? --
I'm not married now, and yes to children, both boys and girls.
Why did you leave the band? --
To attend medical school.
What equipment did you use? --
Fender guitars and amps.
What equipment are you using now? --
Godin Multiac nylon, Line 6 Pod XT Pro, Fender Strat with Roland synth.
What were the high points of your career ? --
Playing and writing with the members of Journey. The star on the Walk of Fame, and the Bammie award are the stuff that dreams are made of.
What are your favorite songs that you performed with Journey? --
"Of a Lifetime" and "Topaz" ... really all of them.
What have you done since leaving Journey? --
School, traveled the world, helped raise a family or two.
Have you kept up on Journey since your departure from the band and what are your thoughts on the musicians that have been a part of the band since? --
Yes, I've kept up with the band and its members over the years. I think it's beyond belief how blessed Journey and all the members of the band have been. Every one of them has been, is, and will always be an essential part of the band and family.
It was especially good to see everyone in L.A. at the WOF event. All the new members (Steve and Deeno) went out of their way to make me feel a big and special part of the band; John Cain was the last person I saw as I left and he had some very heartfelt words with me.
What goes on at The Hive? --
Between The Hive and Scarab Studios -- song writing, audio recording, video editing, graphics, dreams, speculation, some truth, some lies, and lots of brotherhood.
What and whom do you like to listen to when you're not working? --
I'll tell you my current playlist as of early 2005: Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag; Randy Newman "Prologue" and many others, Gerswhin Prelude ..2, Rhapsody in Blue, Alison Krause "Down to the River to Pray"; Ralph Stanley "O Death" and with The Soggy Bottom Boys on "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow"; Robert Fleischman "If I Only Had You" and "If You Want To"; Robbie Robertson "Somewhere Down the Crazy River"; Kenny Burrell many from the album "Guitar Forms".
What are you working on now and who are you working with? --
I have been writing non-stop for the last decade. During that time, I discovered the Spanish nylon string guitar. It truly speaks to me, and I through it. I think that I've done some of my best writing around it. I have always played and written in a fusionistic style. That is no different today, only more so . I like to take it from a very basic organic level up to big band and back down, etc. Ross Valory, Stevie Keys Roseman, and I take the best of those songs and record them. We bring in other great friends and musicians to work with us on these projects. People like Prairie Prince, Aynsley Dunbar, Steve Smith, Neal Schon, Mark 'Madcow' Vulcalsic, Mark Shilts, Tom Size, Doug Doppler, Gibby Ross, Mick (sp?) Gillette, Bobby Strickland, Tim Gorman, and a host of others.
If you could collaborate with any other musician(s), who would they be and why? --
Anyone from Journey, past, present or future, that goes without saying. Through the WOF event, it gave us an opportunity for all of us to visit together again, and I really connected with Robert Fleischman and want so much to work with him. Of course I 'd love to write with Steve Perry and Randy Newman , Alan Toussant .
What are your plans for the future? --
I have a lot of plans for the future...

From The Webmaster
Hello, my name is Rich Meyers. I am the webmaster for GeorgeTickner.com, and it is my pleasure to bring this website to you.
George Tickner, alongside Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory, Prairie Prince and managerial genius Herbie Herbert, was one of the founding members of the legendary San Francisco Bay Area Classic Rock band Journey.
Although George was only with Journey from it's inception in 1973, through the release of their self-titled debut album in 1975, he was an integral part in the band's original sound and vibe and his influence has been imprinted all over Journey's style and sound ever since.
This site is a direct reflection of the same vision and creative genius that is so evident in George's compositions and will serve as a window into the life and career of the man and legend of George Tickner. It will include a Biography, Discography, FAQ Section, Pictures, an interactive Message Board, occasional commentary from George himself and much more.
On George's part, this site is a tribute to the fans and their never ending outpouring of love and admiration for this band and it's music. For myself and my part in this wonderful and unique project, it is a heartfelt effort to give back to George just a tiny bit for his tremendous contribution to a band whose music will live in our hearts and souls for eternity, as well as for George's gracious and kind inclusion of a lifelong fan and admirer in his life, family and the presentation of this wonderful website.
