Sustrans is competing with three other projects for a single £50m Lottery Grant which will be decided by a national television vote at the beginning of December.
Sustrans is the national charity based in Bristol which is building the National Cycle Network – 14,000 miles of cycle routes throughout the UK, primarily off-road or on quiet lanes and streets.
If Sustrans Connect2 project wins, Sustrans will use the money to build 79 critical bridges and crossings over busy roads, railway lines and rivers around the country to connect communities to safe cycling routes. Sustrans Connect2 is the only one of the four competing projects to have truly national impact. It is not only an exceptionally important environmental project but also one which is central to the encouragement of exercise and the reduction of obesity.
