Music? Music is a part of my everyday life. I love the opportunity to listen to new music ... and old forgotten favorites. I especially like when an artist writes meaningful lyrics, as lyrics can take a song above & beyond genre categories. My personal favorite is REGGAE music. Roots. Lover's Rock. Dancehall style. Love it!
Bob Marley has a very special signifigance in my life. His words, his music & his ideals have enriched the lives of so many people, myself included. I have much love, reverence & respect ~ now, always & forever ~ for Bob Marley and for the entire Marley family.
Other favorites? Barrington Levy, Beres Hammond, Dennis Brown, Sista Carol, Sista Nancy, Tanya Stevens, Don Carlos, Jacob Miller, Steel Pulse, John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Garnett Silk ~ the list goes on & on. Far too many to list.
The first time I heard reggae music was back around 1979. Some friends & I were in a subway car beneath the streets of New York when the power went out. As fate had it, a few musicians were riding in the same car, on their way to a summer time gig at a street carnival. Rather than complain about being stranded in the darkness, they started playing their drums & singing, entertaining everybody. Very cool. When the lights came back on people began clapping. More, I think, for the impromptu jam session than for the train moving again.
Pretty soon I was buying mostly reggae albums & began building quite a collection. Musically, it struck a very deep chord within my soul. Lyrically, reggae music spoke to me in a way that no other music ever has.
Ever since then, well ... the rest is history. While still in college, I met a reggae artist from the West Indies. Gifted & talented, with an uplifting & spirited soul. Creative, adventurous, intelligent. Thoughtful, fun & funny. Loving, soulful eyes. A soft, deep voice. A warm bright smile ... and beautiful flowing locks.
The love of my life, for a great many years of my life, who brought so much joy to my heart & blessed me with two wonderful children.
My son Joshua Elijah
My daughter Kayla Nicole Tafari
Shared knowledge & overstanding of Ras Tafari, which I've embraced & use as a guide to a more spiritual & positive lifestyle. We made very beautiful music together, while it lasted. Now, many miles of land & ocean separate us.
I do still love Rock & Roll, too. The Stones are a long time, all time, favorite. Classic. Mick Jagger & I share the same birthday ~ July 26th. I love this photo of Mick with Bob Marley & Peter Tosh.
Aerosmith, The Police, Peter Frampton, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Stevie Nicks, Van Halen, Foreigner, KISS, the Grateful Dead ... they made the music I grew up listening to. India Arie, Sinead O'Conner, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Blackeyed Peas ... they're some of the more contemporary artists I enjoy listening to.
Music has always been & will always be a very special, important part of my life. I remember as a small child, 2 or 3 years old, being fascinated by the reel to reel audio tapes my brother used to make, recording himself while singing & playing his acoustic guitar. I remember getting ahold of some of those tapes when no one was watching, sitting with them in my lap & unrolling them in my small hands. Tracing yards & yards of tape through my fingers. Looking. Feeling. Searching. For the music.

... if the topic is right
I enjoy movies that make me laugh, over & over again but I also like movies that make me cry. I like some action & a good storyline. I don't care much for science fiction adventures.
My favorites, probably, are scary movies. Films like: Silence Of The Lambs. The Others. The Sixth Sense. Seven. Final Destination. Hide and Seek. Saw. Suspenseful plots with a psychological twist.
I prefer watching movies at home, rather than going to the theatre. I have no problem waiting til the movies I'd like to see are released on dvd, so I use Netflix. Highly recommended :)
Television
I like Discovery channel. Animal Planet. Travel channel. History channel. Court TV. HGTV. Local & CNN news (I detest the right-wing conservative slant of FOX news). I like to watch the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, at least the opening monologue. I like Wife Swap. Super Nanny. (A bit illogical, don't you think, that we need a license to fish but not to parent?!?)
That said, I don't watch much tv. Though I do enjoy the aforementioned shows, I rarely have the television on for any length of time & I don't watch any shows religiously.
Books
I have many. I've read many more. Can't say that I have a favorite book, though. Not even a favorite author.
I always choose non-fiction over novels. I like reading small books of poetry and well-written autobiographies (& biographies). Accounts of recent true crime cases intrigue me. Spelling and grammatical errors bother me.
Heroes
I don't consciously look to others to set the standards for my own behavior & attitudes. I pretty much march to the beat of my own drum. There are, of course, people whom I respect & admire.
The people I admire, no matter how different each might be from the next, do have some qualities in common.
Perseverence
Charisma
Dedication
Compassion
... and Passion
Individuals who look toward the greater good & practice what they preach or, rather, practice more than they preach
It's often the most humble of souls who make the biggest difference in the lives of the people close to them. With that in mind, please make a conscious effort to be good to the people near you. Family, friends, neighbors, co-workers ~ the people you cross paths with daily. Practice random acts of kindness. Help when you can. Share a smile. Be a good listener. Drive with courtesy. Then, one day soon, YOU may be my hero :)
B Attitudes
Blessed are those who refrain from exalting themselves above their neighbors in the community of life, for their children shall have a world to live in.
Blessed are those who listen to their neighbors in the community of life, for they shall escape extinction.
Blessed are those who refrain from imposing on others their "one right way to live," for cultural diversity shall be restored among them.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for the survival of Leaver cultures, for they shall preserve a legacy of wisdom accumulated from the beginning of time.
Blessed are those who do not fancy themselves rulers or managers or stewards of the earth, for the earth managed to thrive for three billion years without any of us.
Blessed are those who do whatever they can wherever they are, for no one is devoid of resources or opportunities.
Blessed are those who awaken others as they have been awakened.
"Just put thoughts to rest
and don't seek outwardly anymore.
When things come up,
then give them your attention;
just trust what is functional in you at present,
and you have nothing to be concerned about"

May you always know the power of love

The poetry of the turn of the seasons, the beauty of nature and harvest, and the deep, deep connection of all these things with the Great Spirit. We return thanks to our mother, the earth, which sustains us. We return thanks to the rivers and streams, which supply us with water. We return thanks to all herbs, which furnish medicines for the cure of our diseases. We return thanks to the moon and stars, which have given to us their light when the sun was gone. We return thanks to the sun, that has looked upon the earth with a beneficent eye. Lastly, we return thanks to the Great Spirit, in Whom is embodied all goodness, and Who directs all things for the good of Her children.
Happy Thanksgiving, my friends; I am blessed, indeed I'm thankful for the love you have shared, selflessly. May each road that you travel be paved with a smile. Have a wonderful holiday....enjoyed in style!
Life without thankfulness is devoid of love and passion. Hope without thankfulness is lacking in fine perception. Faith without thankfulness lacks strength and fortitude. Every virtue divorced from thankfulness is maimed and limps along the spiritual road~John Henry Jowett
This is the time of year that we need to stop what we are doing and help those that are
left alone for the Holidays, There are many suicides this time of year because
people are lonely, this is not right and we all know this {makes ya fell kinda
shitty huh?}, so I would like for you all to concentrate on someone you know
will be alone and do something about it! Its not hard to help someone in need,
you do it because you would want someone to do it for you! I also want to say
if someone does you a good deed try and do as many as you can so it starts a
ripple effect! I smile when I meet a cashier even if he/she is not happy and
not smiling, when you speak with them on a human level then it speaks volumes
about who you are and what your’re made of! I think maybe I should not babble
on but just remember we all are not really much different than each other, we laugh,
sing, love, dance, & share just like we are supposed to. We need to connect with each other a lot more
and show what we are made of!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Georgina, I hope you had a great Halloween. My daughter was Miraposa, a Barbie butterfly fairy and my son was Jango Fett, a bounty junter from Star Wars. Now it's time to get ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas! They creep up on us so fast. Hope you have a happy and healthy holiday. Carol
Amidst the ocean depths, far below the light, A lone whale glides by in her watery flight. A cry so lonely, a wailing of despair, Something precious lost in the great somewhere.
Serene, yet watchful, moving always in fear Of death's stillness, she searches ever near. Pulling sunlight upward with care, She caresses the surface and mists the salty air.
Nothing! Not a movement, except a hulking mass, A predator's scent, a watchful, sweeping pass. Dangerously taunting, the sight draws her near As battered nets pull in Death and despair.
Her baby! Her angel! Death had claimed its song, While a quiet stillness seemed to linger on. Across the endless ocean, far below the sky, A mournful mother sang a haunting lullaby.
In The Tao’ Te Ching it is said,
I have just three things to teach:
Simplicity, patience, and compassion.
These three are your greatest treasures.
Simple in actions and in thought You return to the source of being.
Patient with both friends and enemies,
You accord with the way things are.
Compassionate toward yourself,
You reconcile all beings in the world.
We carry with us the habits of a lifetime. We are not asked to
Unravel them all in one instant, but to care for and understand just one moment at a
Time; attuning ourselves to just this moment we begin to understand what leads
To distress, complexity, and conflict, and what leads to calmness, balance and freedom. Patience is the foundation of discovering simplicity. Patience is a gesture of profound
Kindness. Patience teaches us to seek an inner refuge of simplicity, balance, and sensitivity in even the most turbulent moments.
Now on a peaceful fall night, all nature seemed at play, The tender moon was shining bright, the barge at Rye Hampton lay. All in the balmy moonlight it lay rocking on the tide - And the Pirate Cat was disposed to show his sentimental side.
His bucko mate, Grumbuskin, long since had disappeared, For to the Bell at Hampton he had gone to wet his beard; And his bosun, Tumblebrutus, he too had stol'n away - In the yard behind the harbor he was prowling for his prey. In the forepeak of the vessel Growltiger sat alone, Concentrating his attention on the Lady Griddlebone. And his raffish crew were sleeping in their barrels and their bunks - As the Pirate Cat came creeping in their sampans and their junks. Shiver me timbers!: A scurvy cur's ship what ye be intendin' to loot! Me hearty: Swashbucklin': fightin' and carousin' on the high seas! Cat o' nine tails: whip for floggin' mutineers to embark on a piratical cruise Yo-ho-ho pieces o' silver which can be cut into eights to be givin' small change.
