GesuinO DeianA BiO:
IN 1965-7 I started to play rock musix including tunes of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. In the end of all a new style of Sardinian Root Musix call Musicalimba became the main reason to go futher on until today 2007.
Around 1995 as I was touring in UK after a festival show at Pourcell Room in South Bank in London, I meet Thomas Brooman-WOMAD artistic director, this great man invited me to be part of a WOMAD festival in Adelaide Australia...and so on many other sites...Cacerès Spain...Reading UK...Aukland New Zeland...Morecambey UK...Singapore...
Pintaderas: Made in Sardinia became my favorite CD of myself because of Tchad Blake and his great talent...In the while I've been playng a lot with my main sardinian band Cordas et Cannas and not only: Abbanegra (Trio Aoustic Guitars - With Alberto Balia and Massimo Nardi - sometimes we had launeddas played by Carlo Mariani), Para Tres with Cotò (Cuba) and Kilema (Madagascar), this unique trio is one of my favorite.
Mainly I prefer to play solo guitar with my Gibson Chet Atkins tuned in Bb...

The Sardinian guitarist Gesuino Deiana, in his 1997 anthology Pintaderas, takes hold of various traditions of his native island and transmutes and transforms them into something new: as with all the musicians recorded on the discs listed below, he has grasped the paradoxical truth that tradition, in order to live and survive, must also be creation.

Made In Sardinia, by Sardinia's number one guitarist, Gesuino Deiana (1997).
According to Blake, the albums he made with Sardinian guitarist Gesuino Deiana and Gambian kora player Pa Bobo were both recorded equally with the ECM50s and the KU100: "When you hear me on the Sardinian record being outside and walking around or sitting in a car, or you hear sheep, or that guy playing harmonica in the opening track, which was recorded in a pizzeria, that's all done with the Sonys. The music that has some ambience was recorded in a church with the dummy head. The sleeve says that most of the recording was done in Real World, but that's a typographical error -- everything on the CD was recorded in Sardinia. Part of the point of doing these binaural recordings is that I want to give the listener a sense of where the music comes from. I don't want them to just hear the music out of context. It's a way of showing what helped the musician develop his or her style. For example, when Gesuino Deiana is playing he listens to every sound that he hears. Whether it's a car passing or a dog barking, he'll actually mimic that on his guitar a little bit and he'll incorporate that into his compositions. He doesn't get heavy about that, it's just something that happens, often totally unconsciously.

Gesuino Deiana Sardinia Share Today at 2:28am | Edit Note | Delete Gesuino Deiana is as passionateabout his country's musical traditions as he is knowledgable. His brilliant solo performances thrilled WOMADELAIDE '95 with their innovation and evocationof the Sardinian landscape. The music of Sardinia in common withthat many islands -eg. Madagascar or those of the Torres strait - reflects the many cultures of traders who have passed throughits ports. Spanish, Celtic, Arabic and africanmusic havre all left theyr mark. added to this is the polifonic singing of the native shepherds (the tenores). You can hear some of these inflections in the guitar of Gesuino Deiana. A linchpin of Sardinian music. Deiana favours an open-tuned style of guitar playng. His early influences included the legendary bluesman John lee Hooker, and Eric Clapton. However, after studyng anthropology in Italy in the early seventies, he began to make a serious study of his native island's culture. In 1979 he founded the island's top band Cordas et Cannas. This was the beginning of the modern movement in Sardinian roots music which he now helps bring to wider audiences.
