The band formed while at University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS in 1980. In 1981 Talk Talk magazine released their first 45 ("Numbers and Colours" / "Ankle Deep In Mud") and a 4-song EP ("Words Move") on their own Syntax record label. They also contributed 5 songs to the first "Fresh Sounds From Middle America" cassette compilation (also thru Talk Talk).
In 1982 they relocated to Chicago, IL. The group signed to Fever Records (an independent label in Philadelphia, PA) and released their first album, "Action Reaction" in 1984 and another 45 (live "Back Into The Future" / "World Without End" - both live at CBGBs).
For the band's second album, Fever Records arranged a pressing and distribution deal with Enigma Records in Los Angeles, CA. "Swimming With Sharks" was released in 1986 on Enigma's "Restless Records" boutique label. The band disbanded in 1990.
"The music that was on American radio and in the public consciousness in the late 70s and early 80s just wasn't what was in our heads. We were too nervous, too excited and too creative to let Foreigner and Journey be our musical wallpaper. I didn't know what David Byrne was going on about in 'Psycho Killer', but I knew that it was exactly what I wanted to hear. The handful of American (and scores of British) acts that were taking chances at the time were what we lived for. And we were determined to further the cause and fill the air with something exciting. Also, going to college in the middle of Kansas had a way of making you want to do the musical equivalent of farting in church."
I agree! A Get Smart! reunion! But, you should make it both Lawrence, and Chicago. Especially for those fans that were too young to hear your music the first time 'round. You know: those silly college students (current and former) just able to spin your records, but never able to witness the greatness live. Consider.
hey i remember that party too those were good times these are too but those were good times well time to dig out my tape of bob & lisa at the clearwater lounge
I still remember the party -- kind of -- at the apartment where everyone -- or most of the band -- lived -- I think -- on Ashland -- and I was drinking and you were drinking and -- what cool memories! -- when I recall -- yeah.
It was always cool hangin' with you and seein' your shows -- didn't need My Space to think of you as friends but it sure helps to keep in touch.
Still enjoy playing Get Smart in Valdosta, GA. I got into college radio the same time that "Swimming With Sharks" was released. Now I have returned to work at VSU and have had this show for over 10 years. Gold To Rust is a great song. Now WVVS needs to get new turntables.
